BR Engineering is getting closer to their lmp1 being ready. Has nothing shared with the lmp2 Dallara. Sounds good and hopefully it goes well against the Ginetta.

Also on sc365, they're reporting the drs idea has been canned
Quote:
***ACO Sporting Director Vincent Beaumesnil confirmed that they’ve shelved plans to introduce DRS to LMP1 non-hybrids, which was initially on the cards for next year. “For the moment it’s not planned mainly because we don’t have guarantees, from a safety point of view, that we can get it as we’d like for private teams at this stage,” he told Sportscar365

Based on the Prologue so far, Rebellion were right to save their money and run cheaper LMP2s. Granted, we don't know how much faster or slower Kolles will be (and I doubt that anyone would willingly call them a "quality" team), but LMP2s are about 5-6 seconds off the pace, which is about what I think that Rebellion would be with their old cars.

The rule changes to the factory cars are supposed to make them 3-4s/lap slower at Le Mans, which would make them only about 3 seconds a lap faster than Rebellion there which works out to around 1.5s/lap faster around Monza even assuming they weren't able to take any advantage of this season's rule breaks for privateer cars.

Alternatively if you want to look at the most Monza-like non-Le Mans track on the schedule Rebellion was only 4s slower at Fuji and the factory cars should be a couple seconds a lap slower around a track that size, plus Monza would be slightly more in favour of Rebellion than Fuji.

You have to wait for a higher downforce track and/or a track that was used last season for a good comparison.

I have to say Rebellion really should have entered an LMP1 car at Le Mans this year. It was the R-One's best chance to be competitive. But I imagine they entirely lacked the expertise to understand the impact of the hybrid rule changes.

You have to remember that with the LMP2s getting a BHP bump up to about 600bhp, Rebellion estimated that a LMP2 car wouldn't be much slower than their LMP1 while being a lot less expensive.

And it also has to be remembered that Porsche and Toyota did a ton of work to negate the rule changes that the ACO employed to slow the factory LMP1 cars. If such changes were made to their cars last year with the 2016 spec front and rear diffusers, they could've rivaled 2015 lap times at Le Mans.

I'm aware of all of these things and they change nothing. It's Porsche saying they expect to be 3-4 seconds slower, not the FIA. It's entirely possible LMP2 cars will be very close to or ahead of Rebellion's crap lap times at twistier tracks, but we know nothing more about that today than we did last year.

The key here is that the lmp2 guys are running the high downforce package. I now agree that the ACO took the slowing down of the lmp1 cars a bit too far. There's a good chance that if they were running the lm package they would be even faster, definitely on the straight.

Plus, Rebellion would probably want to change their AER engine due to reliability reasons if they wanted to run their R-One again. Even more expenses, and maybe they will need some more time to refit a new engine. We all know how much time it took to refit the car to accept the AER engine, and Oreca probably want to build their new LMP2 cars than do anything else at the moment

That's what DSC reported, but who knows how big it was.

On topic, Rebellion is not going back to p1 next year, but 2019 maybe http://sportscar365.com/lemans/wec/r...eturn-to-lmp1/. Some interesting comments on the Ginetta from them too.

Thinking aloud here...how hard would it be to BOP a privateer P1 with a global P2 and a DPi?

In theory, easy, but in reality maybe a bit harder.

DPi is a BoP class. They said from the outset all cars would be balanced.

LMP2 technically is a BoP class and the ACO cause BoP the cars together, but so far haven't and have said they won't.

P1-P is a development class, so if you start BoPing the cars then it means spending a lot of money on development and running, only to be restricted down to P2. If you're going to do that then you might as well bin P1-P and allow all Pro P2 teams.

The reason why I wondered that was because Rebellion were saying that it's a shame that the new P1s won't be able to race stateside. I think they've caught the IMSA bug.

What if your basic LMP1-P chassis could be modified to compete in both IMSA and the WEC? All of a sudden, for circa £2,000,000, you've got a car that can compete for podiums at Le Mans, Sebring, Daytona, PLM, Spa, Watkins Glen...

The ByKolles slower than most of the P2 field. That chassis must be an absolute dog considering the engine is pretty good.

Kolles has gained speed the second session. Into the 1:45's. Not bad I think for probably only the car's second, actually third outing, if we count each practice as a separate test for it.

I think they will improve even more, it's like a shake down for that package. If they don't have problems, the car should be ahead of the P2 field. Interesting to compare with last year times to see the difference with the AER engine.

Morand was mentioned in the Racer notes too. It would be quite interesting to see another project emerge for the class. The way I understood it was morand would be bringing a new chassis.

It's good to see the P1-L class gain momentum. If the mentioned projects actually happen, we could see a solid grid for not only the subclass but the entire class as a whole. I believe that the privateers are absolutely vital to the well-being of the class, because should the factories leave ( and they will leave) the privateers will take their place, they will keep the wheels turning and so on.
