GP Masters South Africa - post race discussion

Mansell and Fittpaldi - the world champions - a class apart

Some great battles with de Cesaris/Warwick/Lammers/Stuck

No silly moves - but the old guys still have it!

A thumbs up from me

A little shame that there was not much moves in the first part but there was no silly mistakes really, and in the later part of the races some great hard racing.
Well done to Nige and Emmo and a great battle as everyone is a winner!

Btw I don't know but Gehard Berger is old enough to do GPM, does anyone think he would take part in it next year?

As far as I recall, Gerhard felt after the death of Michele Alboreto he wouldn't do any of this type of racing, because he'd be unable to stop himself getting too competitive.

Was a excellent race IMO. Yes Mansell and Fitapaldi were on their own out front but Patrese and co werent far behind, if the series is still around next year id expect all the drivers to be much fitter than what they are now. If that is the case I think that things will be a lot closer, Patrese only faded away towards the end really because of a slight lack of fitness compared to Mansell and Fitapaldi. IMO. Great racing and a great championship!

A great race with battles all the way down the field. The Mansell Fittipaldi "Who can set the fastest lap" Battle was very entertaining, as was the 5 car battle for 5th.

Such a shame that Motors TV tried to ruin it with awful commentary and odd technical problems.

Tried to ruin it? Hmm, okay then. IMO though John Hindaugh did a fantastic job as usual, I forget who was in the commentary box with him but I admit he wasnt the best of commentators. Hindaugh though I thought did a great job considering the circumstances.

Well IMO both were awful. One was way OTT and showed a lack of knowledge of who some of the drivers were and got the wrong end of the stick sometimes, with regards to what was going on. The other was knowledgable but was quite dull to listen to.

John Hindhaugh was just the same as he always is (if you like him, he was good, if you don't, he was poor)

Henry Hope-Frost was clearly knowledgeable but was duller than a dull thing.

I think I'll watch it again on BBC2 just for a Murray Walker fix!

Patrese256 should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
As the first race of what will hopefully become a series this was a great start. Everyone seemed cautious in the first few laps but as the race went on the 'racers instincts' came to the surface more and more. Stuck was spectacular, and the midfield battles between the likes of Lammers, Warwick, de Cesaris and Danner livened things up.

Credit to Mansell and Fittipaldi for putting on a great show at the front. Their performances will do wonders for the series as a whole, but I was delighted with Riccardo's performance as well.

Roll on more races in 2006

Superb race!! I really wasn't expecting racing as close as that... reminded me of Champ Car at its finest (especially with Mansell and Fittipaldi at the front) more than F1 of old though, not as though that's a bad thing. Amazing that Fittipaldi still has it

I have to admit after this weekend I've grown to like the appearance of the converted Reynards. The black "Team Phantom" liveried cars look particularly purposeful - very reminiscent of the first F1 Saubers.

I think you've hit it right there - if you know Hindy's style then he was very entertaining (he is such a *fan*) - if you don't then he could be very annoying.

A great fun race even if my favourite Stefan Johansson went out early. Hope there is a full series to come - fingers crossed.

I really enjoyed the race, especially the mid field battle and the closing stages between Mansell and Fittipaldi, even though I already knew the result. I hope that the series does happen and that Alain Prost competes in it, along with Nelson Piquet and Keke Rosberg.
