Juan Pablo Montoya - "The Great Columbian Hype"

I have heard a rumor that Montoya has requested that the WDC be decided on a qualfying run rather than a full race distance as he was quote saying "A race is a lot longer and therefore you have a greater risk of making mistakes!"

Gee, why thankyou Captain Obvious!!! It is really starting to bug me that the only way Williams are going to win is with Montoya and not Ralf. Statistics might show that Montoya is quicker of a lap, however, who has more wins?? That's right Ralf!

Until Montoya relises that he needs to settle down, he will never be WDC, and for the people out there tht think he would be WDC in a Ferrari against MS are absolutely kidding themselves!!

Therefore, my point is this: - Does Montoya deserve the praise that he is getting or does he deserve a kick in the a#$e for being to aggressive and over ambitious??

Valve, be your very witty remark, I ask you this - Do you think the hype about Montoya is deserved?? From one Aussie to another, it is a simple question!

Mate, I can see that you have just joined our friendly forum, so before we go any further, a big welcome for AussieGuns.
Yes!! I have posted many times before that JPM has brought a breath of fresh air to F1, given us more exciting moments and something to look forward to. Whether you consider him as gifted, average, or mediocre is your priveledge here as we all have different opinions here for discussion. However, Frank Williams thinks that JPM is something special and will be the driver to take the fight to SchM next year. I believe Frank Williams is right on this point.

Valve, it is a very interesting stat that Juan vs Ralf is only 8 vs 7 in qualifing and Juan is only 2 points ahead in the WDC! Also Valve, if you think back during the season, it has been Ralf that has had the bad luck with regards to refuelling etc. Pretty even if you ask me!

Another interesting point is that Juan turned 27 today. Michael Schumacher at that age had already won 2 WDC and won 19 races!

Now realisticly, do you really think that JPM is or can be classed in the same league as MS??

Valve, potential is the dirtiest word ever in F1 and at the moment Madtoya is not living up to the hype and when you look at the stats his team mate is all but matching him across the board. Forget Madtoya and worry about the young Finn who is 5 years younger and blowing away a highly regarded, although underachieving, team mate. Kimi makes less mistakes under pressure and Madtoya proved again in Monza that under pressure he makes mistakes.

Sorry aussie gun but MS had actually won 22 races but when you have won more than 1 (see Madtoya) it is easy to lose count.

Juan is very good but I no longer believe he is in the Schuey or Senna bracket. But he is fun sometimes to watch! Not the complete package by a long-shot though and the hype surrounding him surpasses even that of Button who is now obviously not the next Prost as we were led to believe.

As Al said its the Fearless Young Finn who is the one to watch.

I should resist but.. what the hell.

I've read some quite sensible remarks in this thread (surprising when you consider the title).

Apart from Mr V I think most people so far have said "he needs to get his act together" or words to that effect and I agree. I'll even go as far as to say he is exciting to watch but until he gains consistency he'll never be any more than an overhyped also ran. (I know he's third in the championship but only excusers would say thats good for someone who is the saviour of F1).

I think that if there is anyone who can tak the fight to SchM, then JPM is the driver who will do it. Perhaps, you guys can tell me who else you expect will do that.

Good to see the thread turned into a good discussion because I opened it thinking 'Here we go again!'

JPM is an exciting driver to watch, but has to develop mentally before he can challenge TGF. But by the time that happens TGF might already be off the grid...

But he's already a star in his own right, and is certainly the future, along with guys like Kimi.

Well,

You could say the future is also Button, RS, Yoong even.

They should all be able to take it to the top man whoever he is.

At the moment there are two drivers who could do the job and they drive for Team Willy. The question I have is Why do people see JPM and say he is the one when he patently isn't at the moment. The number of points he's lost this year due to his own failings must be quite substantial.

Anyway. Here's hoping he gets his head streaight before too long otherwise he's either going to have a nasty accident (hope not) or he'll be back in Cart pretty soon.

However, i do believe that JPM, along with Kimi, are the guys to take the fight to TGF. I don't want to turn this into a JPM/TGF comparison thread, but both drivers in their first couple of seasons made mistakes, through their own making and due to cars that weren't always the most competitive out there. When TGF entered F1, after a short while he was seen as the man that was going to take the fight to Senna, unfortunatley we all know that that battle was cut short, and i can also see that the next big battle (JPM vs TGF) may end before it's totally ready to (TGF retiring).

The one major difference between JPM and TGF imo, is the difference in media attention around at the time of each driver when they entered F1. Back in 1991 when TGF entered there wasn't the internet, TV coverage, Sky (for motorsport other than F1 etc) so the spotlight wasn't on TGF (pre F1) where as it has been on JPM, and thats why TGF wasn't seen (pre f1) as the next hope, but JPM has, (this isn't either drivers fault, and in a way, due to the ammount of coverage, it has put more pressure on JPM than it ever did on TGF)

It's interesting (imo) that, whilst Kimi didn't have as much experience as JPM, although he's seen as the man also to take the fight to TGF, when he makes a mistake, he's not jumped on like JPM is when he makes a mistake.

Apparently there are some people here who don't have enough technical knowledge to turn a doorknob.

Let's just go thru the season together, m'kay?

Melbourne: Crappy Michelin tires kill Juan's race after the battle of the year with Schumacher. More than proved he can hold his own with TGF.

Malaysia: Ralf gets lucky when TGF takes off his front win against Juan's tire, and the marshalls make the dumbest call anyone's seen in decades by penalising Juan, who's pace for the remainded of the race would exceed Ralf's, though the deficicit was impossible to make up.

Brazil: Juan loses his front wing against Schumi's rear tires. It happens... Cowardly Ralf gives his brother the win without a fight.

Imola: Meet the F2002. If you missed it, you'll see it again when it laps you in a few minutes. Juan's championship hopes are over. Admittedly, he gets beaten fair and square at _this_ track.

Spain: Lousy track, and a race of attrition. [B]The FW24, at this point, is COMPLETELY OUTCLASSED![B]

Austria: The Ferraris dissapear again over the horizon... The rest of the field is too far behind to even see the controversial finish. As usual, though JUAN IS BEST OF THE REST!

Monaco: Despite his Michelins blistering and turning into total ****, Juan is running second to Coultard and ahead of TGF [B]when his left cylinder bank goes up in smoke![B]

Montreal: Montoya's pit strategy and some _excellent_ driving have him in a position to challenge Schumacher when his engine blows again!!

Nurburgring: Montoya and Coultard take each other out. Not like it would have been much of a race anyway. Ralf finishes fourth, beaten by Raikonnen by 20 seconds!

Silverstone: All Michelin runners are fed by the useless intermediate and wet tires! That said [B]Montoya is the only non-Ferrari to finish on the lead lap![B] Great wet-weather driver, is is Raikonnen.

France: The McLarens finally break through to beat the Williams cars. That said, Juan beats Ralf AGAIN, on a track he hates.

Germany: Fing Hermann Tilke! Juan does all he can, including an incredible performance in practice and qualifying, throwing the car all over the track trying to keep pace with the Ferraris. The Michelin-shod FW24 is completely outclassed, and he still manages to finish second ahead of Rubens and Ralf!

Hungaroring: Admittedly, Juan just can't figure out the line around this track. Was really sad to watch...

Spa: The Malmedy Massacre. But y'know what? Juan beat the hell out of every non-Ferrari runner AGAIN!!!!

Monza: Suspension failure puts Juan out early. If you don't believe me, READ THE DAMN RACE REPORT! IT WAS TECHNICAL FAILURE, NOT DRIVER ERROR! http://www.dailyf1.com/en/2002season.../15/race.phtml

So Juan gets beat fair and square by drivers on equal footing... What, three times this season?

I find Montoya`s driving style is more like Nigel mansell`s than a senna or a schumacher.A great racer, win`s will come soon(next year maybe)not everybody can win the Indy 500.don`t forget senna won his first championship when he was 28, jaun`s 27(happy birthday, pelnty of time.

Tee hee.

Lee I was once listed as "retired on lap 8" in a race at a place called Cadwell Park in the UK. My "retirement" involved my car being upended and coming to rest in the spectator area. I'd run out of brakes.

Two things then. One; things aren't always black and white especially in motorsport and two; don't you think that throwing your car over gravel traps, high kerbs etc. are driver controlled incidents that may just have a bearing on engine, transmission and suspension failures.

So you can read it as reliability if you like. I and I see a lot of others don't.

Bye.
