Martin V8 Lotus 35

I have read the Autosport report on the 12th March Race of Champions at Brands Hatch; a race that saw Piers Courage practice and set a time 1m 36.2s, good enough to put him on row 6
But he didnt start the race.
I recall hearing that the C Lucas team could not start the engine and so towed the Lotus 35 around the paddock.
In doing so the cam belts jumped and valves hit the pistons.
Is that true?

Re the Martin V8. As Repco proved with its engine; a simple reliable lightweight compact engine was good enough in the first year of 3 litre F1 to win the championship.
Why didnt anyone make more use of Teds engine ?
Why did Charles Lucas not persevere with the concept of F2 car with F1 motor ?
Comment please

Any info on chassis 35 - F - 9 appreciated

The car or chassis as driven by the recently deceased Alban Scheiber sr. at the Solitude Ring in 1965 (DNF, accident, lost control on grass and damaged rear end), reportedly chassisnumber 9 is sought.

Or if broken up, that news would be appreciated, too.

This info would be heartfelt by mr. Scheiber´s twin sons, Alban Jr. and Attila.

Purchase of the car, any parts thereoff or related can be discussed with me.

A very special museum is being built by the family (Top Mountain Cross Point).

Kind rgds.

Paul, who owned your car when new? Was it one of the t/c cars that went to Switzerland?

You say the car was photographed in the paddock - would it be possible to see the photo, or a link to it please?

Thanks!

Confirmation

Michael,

I'll PM you. Can you confirm that the California car in posts #155, #156 is a Lotus 35?

As far as I can see, it certainly looks like one, yes. It's the only one (apart from the Tasman 32B) that I can recall having a Coventry-Climax engine fitted, certainly in the US.

Lotus 35-F-9

To my knowledge, after Alban Scheiber, in autumn 1965, 35-F-9 went to Freddy Link from Switzerland. He had his first race on 06.11.1965 at Lignières. In 1966, he did a few events but soon sold the car to Germany.

Can anyone confirm or deny?

Hello Urs,

I cannot find any mention of Freddy Link in the race reports of the Lignieres event in either Automobil Revue or Powerslide. That doesn't mean he wasn't there but one might have expected him to feature in the results with such a car - maybe he had problems with getting the car to run?

I haven't yet looked at 1966 events, sorry!

According to my information 35-F-9 went to Karl Foitek and was fitted with a Lotus twin-cam from new. Alban Scheiber's car was fitted with a Cosworth SCA engine and was 35-F-10.

Hope this helps.

Michael
