Wahner buy this book!!

Hello

I noticed that Mill house books have "The a-z of formula racing cars 1945-1990" by the late David Hodges in their sale for 4.99 (pounds). I am on my second copy of this book and I can say that its the best Racing car book I have ever had. It would also help you with a lot of questions!!

Why'd you tell him that? Now he'll know where we got all that info he's asked about!! Talk about destroying a guy's credibility ...

But seriously, every home should have one! And Cimarosti's book, which is also available at a bargain price ...

The A-Z 1945-1990 book is now discounted to 5 pounds at any major British motor book store (as I discovered at Goodwood) as the new 1945-2000 edition is now supposed to lift 15 pounds from your wallet.

The old book is a complete bargain and as Richard says, a must-have. Don't care much for the new edition. I might have looked on the wrong pages but when I browsed through it at Goodwood it seemed to have left out some of the most interesting cars to make room for many cars of the last decade. That would mean that the new book can't be praised for the main virtue of the old book: complete coverage of the period. Curious to know what Hodges would have said about that.

The new book is a horse of a different colour Mattijs - it's purely on GP cars, starting from 1906 whereas the first A-Z covered F1, F2, F3 and FJ cars from 1945-90. Some of the entries are identical, but there's a lot of new (older) material in the newer book - it's well worth £25, which is the actual price, not £15.

No wonder all those cars were missing!

So I entirely missed out on the new concept, I guess. Having said that, I liked the 'Formula cars' formula better, as it gives you many more opportunities to spot family resemblances and other unexpected similarities between all the relevant single-seaters of the period.

£25? You don't want to know how many guilders you need to separate from yourself to equal that amount! For those from the continent you live a in very expensive country, Richard...

As one who worked in the book trade for many years, I quite see your point Mattijs, but I don't think £25 is all that much for the distillation of a man's life's work and when you consider that it's a specialist work, with a very limited print run, I think it's bloody good value. After all, no Dutch publisher would or could consider publishing anything similar - no export markets you see ...

There are fewer pictures in the second book, but of the three marques you mention, all the photos are duplicates ... except the Kojima, which isn't illustrated in the newer one.
