That isn't "playing by anyone's else's rules".....It is taking general engine specs that work in sportscar racing with a variety of engine configurations and merely adapting them to fit the higher horsepower, etc., that the IRL would want from their cars.... The former Champ Car fans who hate Tony George so much should hear stories told by corner marshalls who have worked in Champ Car events as well as joint IRL/ALMS weekends about how CC treated them like crap, but Tony George would take the time to meet all of the corner workers at the "night before the race" dinner, shake their hands and personally thank them for supporting the weekend...Many of them like the guy and think he is both genuine and down-to-earth and have told me so... Tony George is not the Anti-Christ and never has been...the war ended last year...time to move on... |

IMO, TG-hating or not is going to play absolutely no part in what eventually comes out on this.

I have heard rumors from friends at Honda that Honda wants out the door soon. Whether that happens?? Probably more likely in this climate right now. Nobody saw Honda F1 getting the chop that quickly. If car sales pick back up this year and things calm down some and if some genuine competition in the irl turns up perhaps the chances are better of staying the course. Maybe I will get an early Christmas present. |

Honda - already there. Audi & VW - can't see both brands getting involved, one or the other. Porsche - maybe, they didn't have a problem competing against Audi in the ALMS for the last 2 years. Fiat - possible, Fiat specialise is small cars with small engines so a 2 litre turbo is right in their area. |

Can't see Porsche racing against VW or Audi either... So I would say the Fiat group the VW group and the Honda group are interested...

Actually all it was was more tea and biscuits like last June. The press release was hysterical with all the non committal PR spin comments. Brainfart said "well maybe it will be 2012 now ". Gimme a break.

Here in Italy Fiat have confirmed their interest; probably the recent Chrysler takeover is playing a role.

Or Alfa Romeo, if they're relaunched in the US (as has been rumored).

Can anyone provide a "Where Are We Now?" update? I have an understanding of the overall global scenario, but I don't have enough of passion for the IRL to understand enough of the fine details to give the aforementioned update.
My indirect comments would be that this recession is not a blip. There are a great many issues of global significance that are going to come together over the next couple of decades. The honeymoon is over. Motorsport is going to have to fight for its life. Fuel efficiency; alternative technologies; or whatever. There is a longterm reality to consider. The next thirty years are going to be very interesting. There is going to be an altered state of being. It is unavoidable. Motorsport has to try to work out how it can prosper in this future. |

I personally think the current financial issues will be fixed within the next 3 years to be honest. |

Midweek Motorsport had a snippet from Sam Collins of Racecar Engineering claiming to have seen the Volkswagen IndyCar engine. I don't know if there's any connection to their F3 engine, but VW currently have a Spiess-built 2.0 litre L4 unit there. |

In addition to the manufacturers mentioned in the IRL's teleconference the other day, the Indy Star reported in their weekly "Pit Pass" round-up column on motorsports that there are six independent engine builders also in the mix:
Illmor Cosworth Judd AER Speedway Engine Development (A Good Builder!) John Menard Engines |
