Recording sound

Has anyone had any success in recording sound to accompany in car video footage?

I have a Pen camera, and a recording device, but have yet to nail the sound. Is there a particular mic than the pro's use, to reduce distortion etc?

gaffa tape- the answer to all problems

I use a £50 miniDV camera (records to a mmc card). Mounted on top of the rollbar, it gave mostly wind noise till I covered the mic hole with gaffa tape, now you can hear the engine loud and clear.

Got mine from CPC.co.uk. It'a wee (2*2*1") thing that takes 2 AA batteries and records to a MMC card (1hr on a 512mb card). Trouble is it doesnt like shocks too much and has a habit of quitting first time I hit a kerb, and it would quit when I started the engine when it was on the engine cover!

I think this is related to the battery mounting - I think under high G the batteries compress the contact springs and come away from the contacts at the other end. More work required, but for £50 you cant go *far* wrong.
