Had an interesting day at Brands yesterday. It was pretty damned cold and the track was very greasy. We warmed the car up and I ran it round to the noise check. All was fine so I headed out on to the circuit only for a misfire to appear. We changed the plugs; I went out again, no good; then we thought perhaps it was water/debris in the fuel so we took out the jets and blew them through. However nothing worked so after a couple of hours of fiddling around clearing the jets, changed the coil etc. and of course coffee, we went to lunch.
After lunch we blocked off the entire radiator and oil cooler and ran the engine up it was fine, so I took it out for another run. By this time the back was following the front more often because the temperature had warmed up a bit, there was even a partially dry line! Bearing in mind the radiator blanking the water never got about 70c. The oil stayed resolutely below 80c. The engine ran fine so we can only think that the carburetor was freezing up. Something I haven't experienced previously. Anyway, we got around fifty laps in and although I was way of the pace (couldn't get more than fourth on the top straight) I was the fastest "historic tyred" car out there even having fun with a Morgan GT3. We lowered the pressures by 7psi and still, even though it was sliding all over the place, the tyres stayed stone cold. So, that's my seat time until Goodwood. At least it's a couple of hours more than last year! |

Peter, your analysis sounds logical. I assume your carb setup doesn't include any water heating? Glad you got some track time! |

No water heating and the amount of cooling available is incredible.

So are you claiming 10k, beer and pizza is the answer? What beer? How many? Definitely more testing required!

I had to recite the Burns address too....at least ats my excuse.
Did the bike race today. Sub zero temps from start to finish. OMG it was cold until about 10.00. Still managed a good time (enough to make the "gold band time" for my age group despite being on a full blown mountain bike in a cycle cross race).clearly having askinful two night beforehand is what benefits the modern athlete... So Mike...more than the occasional ruby needs to be factored in.. |

Bob, that old advert for Tungston Auto.Dev. stirs some memories in the back of my mind, but having racked my brain I can't for the life of me remember why! London N.3 (Finchley) was part of my old stamping ground, so I was probably aware of the company as it was certainly in business during my competition years, but it went out of business in 1994.
Something tells me that they had some connection to motorsport, but I'm b*ggered if I can recall what it is! |

I won't put this in "Grim Reaping" but my old man who was a hundred years old died this afternoon, I don't think I'll make that sort of age. Rip George.
