What happened with the Volvo Dealer Team? After winning the ATCC, they missed the first two enduros and missed practice for the Castrol 500. I was just watching the Castrol 500 recently and I'm guessing Robbie was sacked after refusing to start the race. There must of been some huge internal problems.

The story at the time was that Robbie and John Sheppard did not see eye to eye, Sheppard took contol of the team at the begining of 1986

Any of the results that are like the Amaroo ones I got from the results pages in the back of that year's AMRY, which only listed classified finishers in its results. I've filled in the non-classified runners by reading the race reports or watching the races themselves. For the Amaroo results, the others were likely DNFs, rather than NC but running at the finish. I don't believe it was limited to 25. When I post the '89 results you'll see that 36 cars started at Oran Park's round that year! |

The team (and for that matter, most of Volvo's Group A activity) was wound up soon after Bathurst, where Francevic was driving a Ford Sierra for Mark Petch. Speaking of Mark Petch, since he's on this forum I wonder what light he could shed on how his team became the Volvo Dealer Team, and the hows and whys of Robbie's departure. |

Perhaps this is more suited to 1987, but after the Volvo Dealer Team was dismantled, Phil Ward & Lyndon Reithmuller did a deal to buy two of the cars... however the deal was scuttled when Volvo Sweden ordered the cars home. From there they did a deal to take on the two Martins AMG Mercedes from Bathurst '86...
Some notes from the series; - The Better Brakes 300 was also the final AMSCAR round - Each race was given its own 'name' that year (as noted in some of the results on the previous page), most of them were generically the "Motorcraft 100" Amaroo - Better Brakes 100 Symmons Plains - Australian National Lines 100 Sandown - Castrol Challenge AIR - Motorcraft 100 (even though the race was well over 100km) Wanneroo - Motorcraft 100 Surfers - XXXX 100 Calder - Coca Cola Cup Lakeside - Motorcraft 100 Winton - Motorcraft 100 Oran Park - Castrol Grand Final - There was also supposed to be a "Surfers Paradise 6 Hour" for Group A cars to be held at Easter, with the winner receiving $25,000. The race however only attracted 10 entries (included in the entry were TWR Rovers and the Dick Johnson Mustang) - There was general concern throughout the paddock of the rising costs of Group A racing in general, and that the calendar was not well enough throughtout, and indeed too many races were scheduled. - Graeme Crosby couldn't decided how he wanted his car to look either! In the the first six championship rounds, his car carried 5 different looks. - The Adelaide AGP support race, according to the TV coverage, was Rd2 of the South Pacific Touring Car Championship, and the commentators infer that George Fury had won round 1. I would assume that Rd1 must have been at Calder, which was also Rd5 of the AEC... and possibly explains why the race was the "Sun South Pacific 300" ? Last edited by racer69; 4 Jan 2011 at 09:41. |

From the '87 thread...

This is what I'd worked the three-class points structure to be, but I still don't think it's right (or makes sense):
I think Falcadore would have a much better grasp of this than I do. One day I wouldn't mind going back and trying to work it out again. Or perhaps just buying the relevant CAMS manual. Oh, and four class structure? What were the classes? Under 1600cc, 1601-2000cc, 2001-3000cc, Over 3000cc? The second class would only cater for the Gazelle, the Gemini and Mike Freeman's old RA60 Celica. |

Actually your right, it was a 3-class structure in 1986... not sure what made me think it was a 4-class structure that year.
According to an early '86 edition of AA though, there was a late change to the class system, solely to keep Alfa Romeo involved. CAMS wanted to keep the 2000-3000cc and O3L classes that had been in place in 1985, however Alfa had, for some reason, been under the impression the FISA Group A classes would be adopted and threatened to pull out if these weren't put in place. The classes ended up being 0-2500cc, 2501cc-3000cc, and over 3000cc It left the likes of the Alfa's & 325i's in the 0-2500cc class, with the Volvo's & Starions in the middle class. This may have changed by the time the championship came around though, given that the 2L championship was introduced. RE: the points system, confusing as it was, at least we never awarded the series to the wrong person, like what happened in the '86 ETCC... |

Tried the points system on the 1985 season and most of it seems to match, but not a 100 %. I will return on this subject when I have had some quality time with the results. Jesper |

As William said a few posts back, the flashpoint came at Sandown when the cars missed qualifying after the team had worked a series of all-nighters to have the new car ready. Sandown qualifying featured a top 10 run-off for the fastest eight, plus potentially two cars at the organiser's discretion, and Francevic apparently thought (and claimed he'd been told by the officials) the Volvo would get one of those two discretionary slots- Unfortunately, the regs only allowed a car that hadn't run in practice to take one of those slots if it was given the OK by all the other competitors- which obviously wasn't going to happen... According to the report in the book, the officials dithered over this, not telling Francevic he wasn't in until the last minute, with the result that he, in his own words, 'vented my rage and frustration' first at the Clerk of the Course, and then in front of a TV crew- these last remarks, including the comment 'I am sick of the whole outfit' (which according to the book referred to the officials) and suggesting he might not start the race, were unsurprisingly seen by Sheppard as being critical of the team.... On race morning, the cars had been gridded 22nd and 33rd by the organisers, and the older car (33rd) was withdrawn by the team 'for technical reasons' after Francevic drove it in the warm-up session and told the management it was uncompetitive and 'I was going to have to drive it slowly or it was going to break something' (It had already had a diff failure while driven by McRae late on Saturday afternoon). After the car had been withdrawn, Sheppard apparently gave Volvo an ultimatum: 'I said to management this morning that if he drives today, he will not be driving with me at Bathurst...You can tip me out or tip him out' |

The Adelaide GP race was also round 1 of 4 of the South Pacific Touring Car Championship - the remaining races held in New Zealand.

It was round 2 of the series. As noted by chavez in post #31, Rd1 was the Sun South Pacific 300 at Calder (which doubled as AEC rd5)

1986 Australian Group A Touring Car Racing - Discussion and Results
Can anyone confirm Gary Wilmington's blinder of a start at the Pepsi 300 at Oran Park? As mentioned above, he qualified 9th, but judged the start beatifully and IIRC was 3rd by the first corner.

Having a look in AMRY 1986/87, it says that Willmington crossed the line after lap one in 7th from 9th on the grid. 3rd off the line would have been something special.

You win half the races in the series and still don't win the title? Considering his performance over a long period of time, couldn't we just give Fury an honorary ATCC (if you know what I'm trying to say)? He would deserve more than most wouldn't he? Was he lacking a particular quality or skill or win the big stuff (ATCC or Bathurst)?

I'm no expert on the ATCC but it seems to me that he just faced a highly competitive bunch of rivals who were amongst the best Touring car drivers in the world let alone Australia and New Zealand? Peter Brock, a legend Dicko Gricey Big Jim Perkins Moff Skaife (latterly) All would have graced full blown interntional works saloon car drives given the opportunity and desire and would have won races and titles i'm sure. |
