Good move. No reason to drag it out for one more year. Also good that it gets announced early in the year, and not too late for teams to secure cars for next season. Will be interesting to see if the privateers return next year with their own teams.

I guess we can already now assume the bulk of the feild will be made up with PWR SEATs and WCR Hondas.

Volvo should show some balls and build two TC-R V40's even if their so called marketing timeline doesn't correspond with it. Money isn't the issue. I think they even could build commercially sound customer cars if needed.
Volvo simply owes it to the fans and clientele.
One and a half year of V40 remaining effectively means it still takes two and a half year before the new model reaches the market.
An outspoken change to promote the new VEA drivelines.

And really - they don't even need a customer program. I'm sure STCC would give them a national homologation if that's what it takes to keep them in the series.

Apart from being 2L and turbocharged, I don't know much about the TCR engine regs. Do Volvo still use a 5 cylinder? Could that be used in TCR?

Regulatios:
'' Mono turbo charged 4-stroke petrol mass production Engines with cylinder capacity from 1750cm³ to maximum 2000cm³''
So i think they can use 5 cylinder engine

Volvo doesn't have the 5 cylinder anymore, iirc.

Plus it was way over 2.0l.

They still do share their engines with Ford, don't they? If so they could simply use Mountune's BTCC block.

Volvo changed from 5 cylinder NA to 1600 CC 4 cylinder turbo during the 2011 WTCC season when they competed, or evaluated, with a C30.
An evolution of that 1600 CC engine is in the current WTCC S60 and Volvo takes pride in the fact that the first mouldings of the new 4 cylinder production engine, which now comes in every model Volvo is offering, are being used for the WTCC race engine.
The TC-R regulations specify lesser tuning of the engine, closer to production spec, so TC-R would even be a greater opportunity to underline their 4 cylinder only strategy even when being in a car body which will be replaced in little over two years.

Engine 2000 CC max plus turbo, 330 bhp, 410Nm of torque is right in the ball park of Volvo's engine bin. Remember, TC-R relies more on OEM parts than S2000 did.

The Volvo V40 T3 can be had with a OEM manual 6 speed gearbox so available. A sequential box has been fitted to the WTCC engine with the same layout so also an option.

The V40's suspension is Ford derived. A TC-R Ford Focus is already in existence. Volvo could take a look at what has been changed to comply although there is plenty of knowledge in house.

I don't see the problem. Probably a better effort than WTCC which also is using a car due for replacement in a couple of years.

Volvo V40 of the current generation will be laid off next year. It doesn't make sense for Volvo, to build the TCR car on the basis of the current V40. It is unknown what will be new generation of V40. Recent sketches showed not a hatchback, and rather the crossover.

It is more sense to construct TCR of the S60 model. She shouldn't be changed till 2018. But it will be the biggest TCR car in a peloton. Though I don't see in it a problem.

Good point, the V40 replacement will be a Qashqai rival.

I think its fair to say Volvo will build a TCR car, probably not for 2016, but for 2017.

We can probably also expect the return of KMS with VW cars (they where the team that was most vocal against SolutionF cars). And lets see if NIKA has grown tired of not having money for WTCC and they can return to STCC again. Cause lets face it, they wont be missed in WTCC...

Does KMS still have all their infrastructure in place?

I personally wouldn't use the word "expect" anywhere near STCC but I am carefully optimistic about the future!

KMS works as the factory VW team in rallycross now. It will be simple to them to return to STCC.

Robert Dahlgren won the first Scandinavian Touring Car Championship race at Karlskoga. From hospital to victory for Robert Dahlgren.

Björn Wirdheim claimed his maiden Scandinavian Touring Car Championship victory in the second race at Karlskoga, as well as Flash Engineering’s first win since their return to the championship.

Damn, Johan's wheel fell off at turn 2 on lap 1 from the lead. Shame to see that and then another drama in race 2. Shocking weekend sadly. So now it really is Göransson's title, which is still cool.

Maybe Dahlgren will drive the next 2 rounds STCC and Girolami replaces him in the WTCC.
