Very good news for the category. It seems there's a been a shift of ideology from Virgin Air about sponsoring motorsport from a few years ago...

Interesting news and something of a coup for V8SC.
But why Dubai? Surely Abudhabi the home port of Virgin Codeshare (and major shareholder) would have been better.
Still sponsorship is probably aimed at domestic market anyway.
Now all virgin has to do is put chocks in the seat recline for flights under 90 minutes.

You say a lot of clever stuff on here Tony, but that is a high water mark!

Grant Hackett might agree too.

Hopefully Virgin are paying for the sponsorship in $$$ rather than product, as Charlie O'Brien found out

It's the same sort of deal Red Bull has with many of its athletes.
Give them all the product they can sell, and they get the cash.
Many athletes take it up because of the association benefits you get from having a red bull hat / helmet / board.

There is benefits if Archer are trying to sell their percentage of the series; arguably a prospective purchaser would be more impressed if the series has a naming rights sponsor, even if the sponsor was paying 'unders'.

I would be doubtful of that. Its easy to get a naming right sponsor, But to get one that brings in income is not easy.

Only a sucker would not want to see the money in the bank.

Contra only benefits the teams, Very little benefit to Archer

But if Archer were in fact dressing the series up for sale and the input from the naming rights sponsor was in the form of contra, then the benefit to any potential purchaser would be negligible.

Moving on, if Virgin do in fact come on as naming rights sponsor, it's good to see the series kicking some goals. If in fact Archer are looking to sell out then good luck to them - can only hope that any purchaser does a better job of getting to grips with the series much faster than Archer did - it seemed to be a real struggle in the early years of Archer's ownership.

On the other hand, if Archer stay on for now, good luck to them as well, it seems that they have the place running better these days. Although it is not without its problems, that makes it the same as most businesses really.

Interesting that Mr Gover's article claimed Virgin as sponsor with a race in Dubai - V8SC have come out and denied the Dubai race claim but have said nothing re Virgin so it looks like the story may well have been half true.

To be fair to Archer they were thrown in the deep end - especially with the TV contract experiencing troubles after 7 did their numbers on the previous contract

Archer had to manage the outcome of the previous ownership - who over sold & under delivered on previous stakeholders/ partners

Indeed, a contra deal is better than no deal - I guess we'll find out more today, including which division of virgin is involved, it may not be the airline.

In regard to Archer, they did substantial due diligence including the use of external tier 1 accounting firm assessments of company value. Based on that process, they bought into the company for a figure they were prepared to pay.

The company they bought was in a pretty good place but as with any company, there were aspects that needed attention and Archer (by their own later admission) didn't come to grips properly with the industry for quite some time - it was of course a new industry to them.

IF in fact Archer IS looking to move on, hopefully any incoming part owner will learn from that and work out a way to hit the ground running.
