Ah I can see it now, thanks for the pick and very sad, I know the racing is better now but the current circuit corner wise is much the same and flat and more suited to touring cars in my opinion. I think they left the rest of the circuit for the wildlife am I right as the picture demonstrates?

I've tried many times, and simply couldn't come up with a good circuit in which the space avalible, if it wasn't a flat area and had more width space not just length of the original circuit in place then I would be sitting in ideas.

THEY CARVED IT UP?
Thats too bad - they could still have kept the old loop for other purposes. That's sad. |

there's a 300m-ish stretch left on the straight towards the stadium section, but that's it.

It's a bit sad that they didn't keep the old Hockenheim track... the Ostschleife, so to speak. On the other hand, it's better to demolish it totally than to just let it sit there and grow old and weary like some old tracks in France, for instance.

Very good everyone - I like the designs!!!
I have made one here it is; It is probably not environmentally viable in that it may take up too much space, but here it is; A point worth noting is that the Kopie Ecke, is a direct copy of the Ostkurve, but in the same place at the current Spitzkehre. PAUL |

Martin, I don't think there is a straight long enough, given your corner combinations, to allow for much passing. The chicane is unnecessary at Kopie Ecke because the run isn't that long, and it doesn't help overtaking given the nature of the turns at Einfahrt Weld. The run into Aufledung isn't long enough either. Also, the pre-2002 Nordkurve created plenty of potential for maneuvers, without as much of a chance for pile-ups with a bunched field as the current corner provides.
Honestly, I liked the simple effectiveness of the old circuit. There was great racing; the track through the forest had a certain intimidation factor, and the scenery was beautiful. |

When you consider the size of the Parabolika at the current Hockenheim - then I think that the chicane at the Kopie Ecke would provide an overtaking opportunity. The challenge was to try to retain some elements of speed, and aggresion that the old circuit possesed, within the confines on the newer circuits boundaries.
The Nordkurve would be a flat out right now - leading to the Hammerkopf which would be taken with a balanced throttle approach, if drivers get this right, they could potentially launch a manouvre into Infeld. After that corner, Clark is quite a slow turn, but the straight after whilst not excessively long - would give adequate room for cars to reach a high speed, gifting a passing place for Einfahrt Wald. The next genuine place to pass would occur at Aufladung - which after the Mercedes Arena would possess overtaking qualities - because the Mercedes Arena much like Turn 8 at Istanbul could be taken flat out, especially in the second half of the turn. That is my vision for it at least... PAUL |

In my opinion, they've wrecked Hockenheim. It used to at least be different with its long 200mph+ "straights". Now it's a glorified stadium section (which was a horrendous idea to start with). So I've had a play with using the good end of the track and filling that stadium with gravel:

Hmm... interesting thought, Jam. Don't remember ever seeing a Hockenheim edit like that.

Oh dear, it's back to nature. What made the Ostkurve-Hockenheim so special is that teams had to find a set-up that was both suitable for the low downforce section leading through the forests and for the tight Motodrome. So spectators had a good view of driving ability in the stadium section because drivers had to go through there with setups that had less downforce than the Motodrome would require if standing alone.
Now it stands alone, so a huge part of the reason why the cheering crowd there was reportedly such an excitement has been torn down with the Ostkurve. By the way, I remember having seen some photos on the web of an overgrown Anderstorp circuit, if I could only remember where exactly, I'd have posted it here. |
