Brands Hatch pole time?

The lap record on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit is 1:09.593 set by Nigel Mansell in 1986. I know there have been slight changes to the circuit since then but would anyone like to take a guess as to just how close to this time next weekends polesitter will be?

F3000 in 1990, 1:13 I think. Given the fact that Graham Hill Bend has been tightened since then and some other alterations have taken place you can be sure it'll be a bit slower than that. I think 1:17, 1:18 has got to be around the right sort of time.

I remember hearing 1:20.xx for the GTP/Group C cars over the PA system a year or so ago. I don't know how much they were on it, but with modern technology I'd expect the A1 cars to be at least as fast as that, especially as its a properly competitive series.

Dont forget that a lap record is in the race which means with high fuel load or worn tyres. Qualifying will be out of the box on new rubber with low fuel.

Im gonna go for 1:10.5

I remember 'half Nelson' setting the outright record of 1.18 something in F3 in 2003.
But Westfield has been changed since.
I'm going with Mackmot, in the tens - just, 1.10.9

I don't think they'll be that fast...
I think I'll adjust my estimate in light of the 1:18 F3 record, but to just 1:14.

The reason is I've been thinking that if in 2003 the Champ Cars did 37 flat on the Indy circuit, and that while the indy circuit makes up about half a mile less than the GP loop in the whole circuit, its also a bit slower so the times for the two portions of track would be roughly similar, perhaps a couple of seconds faster for the GP loop when you factor the two straights into it. They'd be doing around 1:11 to 1:12, and there's no way an A1GP car is going to be as fast as that.

1:13.5, but were Brands at the <i>end</b> of the season I reckon low 1:11s.

The grip level of an A1 GP car will be more than an 86 F1 car and for less drag. They have about 250bhp less power and similar torque. I reckon they will be close to an FW11 but the track is also a bit slower.

I think a bit slower is an understatement... GH Bend has gone from almost flat out to probably slower than Druids. Its got to be worth 4 or 5 seconds at least... Dingle Dell Corner/Sheene Curve is also a bit slower, even with the chicane removed.

Just noticed the A1 GP web site here suggests lap times will be in the 1m 10s area...

Some of you guys must have inside information. Going by some of the comments, I'll go with 1.12 in dry conditions, but hey it looks like its going to rain on Sunday. Typical British weather. Any ideas on likely crowd attendance ?

This has been discussed elsewhere.............somewhere between 30-50,000 seems to be favourite. I guess a lot depends on the fickle weather.

Scott Speed (Team USA) did a 1 min 16.51 so my guess doesn't look too bad!(1.16.3) Although I can see another second coming off of that for pole. Obviously Mansell's 1min 9 was acheived with a lot more power than the 550bhp A1 car and probably more downforce as the Williams was running with barn door wings!!!

Let's hope it stays dry as the cars and Brands looked superb
