Ford in sportscar return!
There is an interesting picture in autosport today. Its a cross between the Bentley and Saleen and it comes with news that Ford WILL return to sports car racing. The car will be a factory backed prototype racing for the first time at daytona next year. The car is being developed with Robert yates (NASCAR) and Multimatic (GT). Its being based on the new Focus hatchback. Adding to this, Saleen and Roush are heavily involved in the new road version of the GT40, leading to rumours of a race programme for the car to follow also, a project denied by ford.

AFAIK the Focus Sportscar is to be built to the new 'Daytona Prototype' regs for the Grand Am series.

Guy, you K correctly. It is a DSP with a chassis built by Multimatic (of MBD Panoz fame - I guess that means they won't be running the 07 next year); Ford provides the engine and some $$$ for the promotion of the Focus (and a set of Focus headlights). The car is NOT based on the Focus, it is a purpose-built GrandAm prototype that uses some Focus design cues. I am not sure how much of a works involvement there will be; GA doesn't want factory teams. I assume you will be able to buy a "Focus DSP" racecar at Multimatic.
TRD have announced they will have a Toyota 4.3l V8 homologated for GrandAm. That seems to be an engine deal only, so, no Focus vs. Corolla "Battle of the Thoroughbreds" I'm afraid!  (Austin Maestro DSP, anyone?) |
