Agreed re Greenhalls, I had forgotten. Long ago I was a regular at the Halfway House on the A580.

Compared to Harp & Skol even **** water had to be an improvement. I was always amazed by the attraction (to tramps mainly) of Special Brew it tasted disgusting and was about the same strength as a normal Belgian beer! One of this year's Christmas beers was a brew that translated as Silent Night, it has a mere 12 percent alcohol content! The beer menu in the bar that was serving Silent Night mentioned that Belgium has around 1,150 different beers, they would take a bit of working through! |

Whilst on subject of beer for circuits!
Will bring a 'pin of local (Basingstoke) Longdog Brewery's finest down to HSCC Easter Thruxton - no b....cks or fancy marketing just excellent proper real ale from a micro-micro-brewery ... if you want to give it a try come and say hello, bring your own glass!
Small caveat: assuming I have a car to race there ..! James |

Blimey, way this thread is going sounds like no-one will be in a fit state to do any racing this season!
Like most things in life, seems beer is all down to personal preference. I'm in the Leffe or Pelforth camp, but 'Brune' rather than 'blonde'. Not very patriotic but that is what I enjoy. There is a range in the truck though, to cater for alternative tastes........ |

I generally take a few boxes of Speckled Hen for the marshals at MG Live.

Mike,
I'm with you on the Pelforth Brune - fantastic beer but never found anywhere in UK I could buy it. Used to load up every year on the way back from Le Mans but as I don't go these days I've not had the opportunity. Love the Kriek at Spa. Many years ago a few of us went to watch the GP at Spa. Went to a cafe for breakfast which seemed to consist of waffles and Bloody Marys. Then we read the beer menu - it was several pages long and it seemed rude not to try and sample the local fare! Some fantastic Trappiste biers. Three changes of staff later we staggered out for some frites and mayonnaise. That was quite a breakfast! Of course that was before I started racing - never touch a drop now |

There is usually some Pelforth in the truck. Just a few- for those with a more discerning taste. I can give you list of which events you need to do this year, to be in with a chance of sampling one |

Yes saw the GP from the bank on the run down to Pouhon - pretty awesome place to see F1 cars! We also managed to get a few free litres of Bittberger from the M Schumacher appreciation society that year. Ah motorsport it's a regular international beer festival with added vava-voom!

It got so out of hand that the organisers applied a limit to the daily alcohol allowance for Bathurst spectators. They applied the positively tee-total limit of 24 cans of lager (a slab in colloquial terms) per day.

Dave, I am a little concerned about your vast knowledge of alcohol consumption at race meetings....

I do remember a single-venue (but two day) stage event - the Solway Lido - that was based in an out-of season holiday complex.....and the regs for that definitely included the opening and closing times of the bar....and a decently late start on the Sunday morning........part of the Lada Challenge, as I recall Must have been sometime in the 80s..... |

If it was a slab of Tooheys 2.2 (not sure they make it anymore? think fosters) I could understand the problem . . . . gold top on coco pops is stronger !
If it was Little creatures you'd need a slab or two of water as well (yes There is quality ale available) |

The last time we were there, the English translation of the finals included the wonderful line: "Drivers are requested to drink reasonable amounts of alcohol before their race" |

I think after two or three pages of discussion most agree that alcohol and historic racing go hand in hand, but hopefully not at the same time.
Back to 2013, yesterday I sent a race entry off! I can confirm, Gordon and Joe, that Cliff Ryan and myself will be joining you at Spa for the Touring Car races in May. Unfortunately for other race organisers looking for entries, that will probably be only race the Escort does this season. Hope it all comes together for Peter Auto, as am really looking forward to opportunity to drive that car round Spa on slicks. (Better not rain!) As for rest of my season, a full schedule is on the cards, but none of it in anything of mine. The opportunity to share a rare and beautiful car in all GT&SCC and a few Masters events has been generously offered and accepted, subject to testing in March going OK. So far have only learned that can get in it, and steer it without legs and arms getting tangled! One other event in another car still to be decided- again sharing. Nervous? You bet! |
