Drivers by nationality

If every country would have only one driver in F1, what kind of list it would be.
Currently there are drivers from 11 countries in F1. 7 countries have only one (test drivers not included):

Columbia (Montoya)
Finland (Räikkönen)
Spain (Alonso)
Canada (Villeneuve)
France (Panis)
Australia (Webber)
Netherlands (Verstappen)

Then, I rate these four as the best of the country:

Germany (M.Schumacher)
Brazil (Barrichello)
Great Britain (Coulthard)
Italy (Fisichella)

We have 9 places left. I think the following should have a chance for them:

Austria (Wurz)
Japan (Sato)
Sweden (Wirdheim)
New Zealand (Dixon)
Mexico (Jourdain Jr.)
South Africa (Scheckter)
Czech Republic (Enge, despite of failed drug test)
Portugal (Monteiro)
United States (Hornish Jr.)

Following countries are missing:
Argentina (any better than Fontana or Mazzacane?)
Belgium (Goossens maybe)
Denmark (Magnussen or Kiesa)
Switzerland (Fässler drove F1 Safety Car in Canada 2001)
Malaysia (Yoong .)
India (Karthikeyan)

I would like to add another country on the "should have a chance" list:
Romania: Mr Red

What I'm talking about. Make a new list, "MUST have, and Formula 1 loss"

No offence Red,but can you name a Romanian race driver? This is about the only European country that AFAIK has never held a race. Please let us know if you know otherwise.

No offence Rob. Yes, I actually CAN name a Romanian race driver. Actually a couple of them, unfortunatelly both were prewar drivers. (we were a "communist" country, remember? We did not waste valuable resources and time on such decadent western entertainments... )

PS: The only current driver (and yes, I can name one ) has just replied to you...

Why we should put one driver per country ?

I think the countries with most tradition in F1 are well representated with more than one drivers.

There's little chance Hornish will get a shot at F1. We don't really know how good of a road racer he is. I think he's probably good, but F1 calibre?

I wouldn't put Coulthard as the top Brit...

i always thought the whole point of F1 was that it was the best drivers in the world, NOT a representative from each country, although we could create a Olympic formula.

I found out Sri Lanka has a race driver. First non Japanese to race in the GT series over there and made it on merit and slowly working his way through series. From the article I remember he set up a small school in his home country and tried to raise motorsports profile in the country.

But I can't remember his name... argh.

I don't mean we should have. The list I made was the example of internationality of motor racing.

My idea started when there were even more nationalities in F1 than there are now.

I made also a calendar of tracks which doesn't include any of 2003 F1 tracks.

Australia (Phillip Island), Japan (Motegi), South Africa (Kyalami), Spain (Valencia), Portugal (Estoril), France (Paul Ricard), Italy (Mugello), Czech Republic (Brno), Germany (Sachsenring), Belgium (Spa), Netherlands (Zandvoort), Great Britain (Donington), USA (Elkhart Lake), Mexico (Mexico City), Brazil (Rio de Janeiro) and Argentina (Buenos Aires)

Good thread BTW.

One country that is missing and should be producing some F1 pilots: USA. Who do we have from there?

Herta? Jeff Gordon (go on it'd be good & he and Montoya never did swap cars...)?

And for Denmark, what about Kristensen?

I think that the presence of many drivers from the same country in some categories, reflects the popularity and the support that is given to motorsports.

In reallity if there is to be another American to be in F1 any time soon, it will probably be either: Townsend Bell is in F3000 this year, or perhaps Phil Hill's son Derek who is also in F3000 this year. Other drivers in the Red Bull program might see some action in the future also.

I don't know, Jimmy just doesn't seem to have the speed he once had. Recall he was offered a spot at BAR beside JV.
