2004 - more overtaking?

Do people think that in 2004 we will see more overtaking, or maybe "better" overtaking manoovers?

With the reduction in downforce and the continuing mechanical grip increase from the sticky soft Michelins and Bridgestones I think we may see more spectacular moves pulled off.

I predicted at the start of 2001 that we would see more overtaking in that year as the tyres would be softer and the reduced aerodynamics (from 9 rear wing elements to 3).

The worst year for "racing" was 1999 without doubt with the Bridgestone super hard tyres.
Towards the end of the 2000 season Bridgestones tyres became softer in anticipation of Michelins arrival in 2001.

Other factors are that the teams are looking to be very competitive with each other for 2004. I think there's a good chance that there will be much more passing.

I agree that 1999 was a pretty lousy season for overtaking.

1999 was pretty bad for overtaking. 1995 wasn't all that hot.

Let's hope there will be more overtaking.

It's possible, but really we need a bigger reduction in downforce irrespective of the level of mechanical grip.

One thing which might reduce overtaking is that, now the one-lap qualifying is established, teams are less likely to run unusual strategies and get false grid positions.

The number of wet races will have an effect on the totla number of moves, of course - Silverstone excepted, all the chaotic races last season were in the wet.
