That's too new to get me going... the original Eagles were the bomb. Especially Dan's with the blue tinted windshield. But the stylized Beak was the detonator.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/tom-margie/3523378554/ there you go. BTW that thin plate shown covering the tailpipes was considered the first rear aero wing in Indy history in 1967 when it showed up on not only Dan's and Jerry Grant's Eagle/Fords entered by All American Racers but Denis Humes that was entered by Smokey Yunick. Yes along with Dan's tailpipe plate and Foyt's front lip spoiler sport by AJ and Joe Leonards' Coyotes/Fords in 1967 it has become known as the year that aero dynamic wings came to Indy. Only problem Dan was experimenting with the plate in 1966 it wasn't on any of the other gurney Eagles that year but it was on Dan's. I believe it was a case of nobody paying any attention to something Dan wasn't really wanting to talk about much. Heck by 1967 Dan already had mimics in that Cale Yarborough's Vollstedt/Ford had a cover plate on his tailpipe. I remember the time that Chet Chopick put a mic in front of Dan after qualifying and asking him it was as hairy out there as everyone else had been saying... "Well Chet I didn't see much hair out there but the winds were tricky in 3 and 4." but I digress. |
