winslade6770 should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Question

I was wondering if you could help me out. I have had a hip operation for the second time so I can almost write off any marshalling this year as a result, is there any other duties I could partake in?

I was thinking race control etc? But have no idea how I could get involved.

Any help would be much appreciated

You'd be best off contacting the chief marshals of the various clubs who run things at the circuit you're closest to. At the very least they'll know who "runs" RC, if it isn't the club team, at their meetings.

In terms of jobs - the obvious one is race comms (either phone or radio) which is a sit-down job, or if you're a bit more mobile you could get involved in general meeting admin which might require some walking about with paperwork. If you're feeling really adventurous you could give timekeeping a go, or both adventurous and mobile could take you towards the scrutineers.

Which circuit is nearest you?

I imagine the entirety of BARC's employee's at HQ are a touch busy working through the requirements for the WEC meeting at Easter...

Drop the CSCC co-ordinator a line - details here. Looks like they're the weekend after Easter, and Robert will know where he could use you.

Why not just go on Post and sit down?

Don't believe me?

Go to the Historic Racing Today area and look @ the second picture down on #126 of the Goodwood Members Meeting thread.

Some of the smaller club meetings may be able to use you as a Safety Car Observer. I did it once and had a great time - it really helped already being a marshal as I had the understanding of how the cars should behave on the circuit, plus I gained a better idea of the marshals posts and viewpoints from the driver's side....win win all round. Lots of sitting strapped in to a car, though, so may not help with the hip recovery...(good luck with that, btw)

Yup, SC Observer is a great job - I've done it on and off for the BRSCC Midland Centre for the last couple of years. As you say though, it can get a bit uncomfortable, especially during longer races; during meetings with lots of short races it can be pretty darned hectic too!

Definitely one to consider if you're (a) good/confident on a radio and (b) happy to take detailed instruction at short notice which contradicts the things you planned earlier! You are *very much* the Clerk's eyeballs when deployed, too, so it comes with a degree of responsibility which isn't visible from the outside.

Biggest plus point: air con or heating

Tbf with pits/start line at most meetings you will be walking around a lot more than out on post.

At some meetings with a larger team it would be possible to get a more specific duty with less moving but would more than likely still be on your feet.

Fair enough might give it a go then see how I go. Thanks for the heads up though.

It's a little while since I was at Thruxton but when I was last there in the Pits there was a role for "pits entry buzzer" - sounding a warning buzzer each time cars drove into the pits. It needed to be done from more or less a static position, so may suit if you need to not be too mobile. Otherwise pits and startline can be hectic with a lot of moving around, depending on the circuit, the size of the team and the number and length of the races - I've easily done in excess of 10 miles on busy club days with a small team. Some circuits have a pit exit role which tends to be less mobile, but can be a lot of standing up. Have you thought about assembly? again depending on the circuit and number of races this tends to be working in a relatively smaller area (compared to the pits anyway) and so may give you a good balance between mobility and a chance for a rest, but be warned - it's not as easy at it looks! Hope to see you in one of the specialist areas soon.

As a dual grader, I can say with absolute certainty, that I do way more physical work (running and walking) whilst doing Specialism than I ever do on Track - and this is in all areas of Specialism (except maybe Comms). There is a fairly common perception out on the bank that Specialist do a lot of standing around and the role is easy - this is a complete and utter myth.

However, that being said I believe it is important that our hobby is inclusive, and it is my believe that reasonable adjustment (I say this not in lawful terms, but simply in "moral" terms) should be made to accommodate your needs. Any Chief of Area (Specialism) really should be able to find you a role of some sorts that will fit both your needs, and the meeting, but it may very much depend on numbers. If I saw that you had turned up, but were "rejected", I for one would be a very cross individual indeed. I think it is probably easier to find a role to fit in Specialism on a day to day basis, than perhaps trackside.

e.g. roles could include pit exit, splitting on a grid, helping Chief Flag with penalties, "booking cars in" in assembly - there are lots, but each meeting will be different so it is difficult to generalise.

Comms has to be worth a look - it is an eye opener and requires skill (that I don't have LOL) to be able to do it well. But might as well learn a new skill.

S/C is an interesting one. Again there is a perception that you just sit on your backside making the odd radio call. Well, yes, if you do it badly. It is quite physical - you need to wedge yourself in on high g corners, you'll need to be able to twist in the seat to look out the back on the move, pretty damned uncomfortable. Plus you'll be on your own first out, so will need to be really confident on the radio (both broadcast, but, more importantly, listening), understand the "bigger" picture, track conditions, race car performance, lap chart in your head, and what to do when it goes wrong (like radio goes down) - if you are confident with the physical side, and the other bits, certainly worth a look. (May also be used less due to code 60 though).

Not sure if it has been mentioned elsewhere in the thread - but what about flagging - is this a possibility? Does require to be on feet a lot, but not so much walking tbh?
