Graham should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid

Hey Tim,

You know that book "Competitive Driving" that you hadn't heard of. Well, I actually looked through that last night and it's not one author (or rather Editor like I said before : Peter Roberts) but a number of stories written by various drivers about their experiences :

- G.T. & Prototype Driving : Mike Parkes
- Formula 1 Racing : Innes Ireland
- Background to Success : Raymond Mays
- Against the Clock : John Sprinzel
- Mostly with the lid off : Roy Salvadori
- Hill Climbing : Tony Marsh
- Racing Drivers' School : Jim Russell
- Club and Definitions (listings of British Motor Clubs, probably all defunct now)

In the middle of the book there are ... hang on... 23 photos of the authors driving the cars they talk about.

I've just hoiked this out of the Definitions section :

"Restricted events are run under the same rules as closed events with the exception of the value of the trophies which is limited to £25. National British race-meeting organisers may pay starting money, and the total in starting money, prizes and awards must be a minimum of £500."

Wonder if there are rules like that now...

Can you ask that book shop bloke if you see him please ... or does he have a website?

Hiya Graham.

Sorry, Missed this thread last weekend. You may or may not have noticed I pretty much disappeared for a week from these forums.

Not through choice, I might add. My telephone went down, and with it went any access to the internet. Curses!

As to this book of yours, it sounds a splendid read. I shouldn't be at all surprised if a little investigation turned up most of those motor clubs still going strong, and "Restricted" meetings still taking place on club days up and down the land.

One of these days, you'll have to check out the Bentley Drivers Club raceday at Silverstone. They work to a different agenda to anyone else, and I suspect that the event is "restricted" to BDC and invited members of other clubs. They run to different regulations which can mean a grid with a Formula Ford, a vintage Bentley, an Allard, a racing Morgan Plus 8 and a Cobra starting together.

Believe me, I've seen it! The MSA frowns on this sort of antic these days, but the "restricted" status of the event gives them the leeway they need.

I'll dig out Simon Lewis' website address for you. It's well worth a visit. Just hold onto your wallet.

Still can't say I'm familiar with your editor, but all the other names are quite familiar. I met Roy Salvadori once, and a fine old gentleman he was. Hand on your heart time, Graham. Had you heard of John Sprinzel before?

Wow! Gerard, how do you find these sites? That was excellent.

It said everything I would have wanted to say about John Sprinzel, and from the man himself. Terrific.

And I'd forgotten completely about "Ecurie Cod-Fillet".

That's even sillier than my "Scuderia Criceto Rampante" Fantasy F1 team.
