It must be the car Alex is talking about, it's now owned by Dr Helmut Stein, still waiting to be restored one day. However there is a second and last space-frame car; the car which was in 'kuemmerling' livery, however it's virtually non-existent. With other words, all the bits and pieces are there but the chassis is no more...

Hi Alex,

The car in the photos is still waiting for restoration. What Kurtiejjj is saying is that there was another Zakspeed space frame car which is now been cut up and scraped. What I know of this car is that it was in a very bad way, so striping out all the good parts was the only option. Somewhere I have a photo of the chassis # of the scraped car, I will look for it.
How long ago was the car offered to you? Where was it located at that time?

Gary.

Peter Mücke brought the car to Germany from Finland. As far as I understand it may have been stored in Hamburg for a while??

Hi Gary,
I think it was about 8-10 years ago i was offered the car. At the time I think it was in Scandinavia somewhere. And thinking about it now I think it was maybe Peter Mucke that bought it.
I was looking through some old magazines a couple of weeks ago (from Eastern Europe I think...) and saw at least 2 pictures of Zakspeed Escorts wrecked by Hans Heyer, a mk1 and a Mk2 I think. Maybe useful to fill in some gaps regarding cars.

I have just received some photos from a contact in Germany.
I am fairly confident the car I own is the Toshiba liveried car in the rear of one image.
I am told these photos are from later in 77, so after the Gp2/Gp5 cars were replaced with the late spec Gp5 cars.

Kurtiejjj, there are also a few shots of a car in the same livery to the Ringshausen car but in Blue/Red and with different number?

@ZAK65 have you read my PM yet ?

These are seriously brilliant photos by the way! This proves their were 4 Zakspeed Escort Gp5s! I was still thinking that one might have been liveried differently for various drivers throughout the season.

That means the Ringshausen car must still be somewhere. By the way you can notice it was an early car if you look at the rear wing, it's different than on later escorts, aero package is different as well in some details. I still haven't heard anything from Ringshausen, perhaps I should pay them a visit when I'm in germany.

The Ringshausen pic I posted was from 1978, which would explain the different number.

I can't remember whether it was 1971 or 72 when I was working for Wooding in Hamburg. At that time Zak was running a 1300cc Escort. We built two Escorts during the winter. Maurice Gomm (not sure of the spelling) prepared the shells for us. I brought them back to Hamburg in the transporter. The back axles came from Ford Cologne and were aluminium. The suspension links were clamped on as opposed to being welded, a bit like a large SU throttle arm! There were four trailing links and a Watt's linkage. The leaf springs were replaced with Teflon ones, which did absolutely nothing, springing was supplied by East to West crossed over tortion bars (modified Morris Marina from memory). The cars were completed over the winter, testing completed and all the spares prepared. Wooding went bust before the season started and Zak bought the transporter, cars and spares which were all ready to go! I went back to the UK and never found out how the cars performed or what Zak did with them.

Hmm, interesting, As far as I know the scraped car I was talking about was the last Gp5 escort built, the one Boller drove in 1980.

ZAK 01 G5 77 is as far as I understand Heyer's car. Do you actually have the chassis plate or just a photo?

I was told that the car was driven by Heyer first & then when he got a new car Hahne drove it.

I only have a photo and this is what I was told. Sounds as if there could be some mix up. I do have some other photos of the car with the chassis in many parts, but these will take a while to find!!

Alex, I think you are right to say the car would have been driven by Heyer and then Hahne. What I know about my car is that in 76 (Gp2) it was piloted by Ludwig, then converted to Gp5, driven by Heyer and then when the new Gp5 cars came along it was used as the 3rd Zakspeed car for the 77 season.
It seems to be that Heyer was always given the new cars.

To add more possible confusion, the Racing Sportscars site shows a plain white car #54 driven by Armin Siefener to 9th place in the '78 Nurburgring DRM race.Car entered by Zakspeed/Mampe.

Am I allowed to add even more confusion? Look at this page, from the N'ring Supersprint 1978; http://www.racingsportscars.com/phot...-01-photo.html Jürgen Weiler also driving a white Zak Escort Gp5 with #54.

A few years ago this was posted on a german forum:
Quote:
Basically says that gary's car was driven in 1977 by Hahne and then Dr Betzler, 1978 by Siefener und Weiler in METZ livery.

This however clashes with Gary's own information which states his car was at Macau 1977 and then sold there. Obviously this is the right scenario as he's got the papers to proof it!

Kurtiejjj,

This is all very interesting, at the start of this thread I mentioned the car was in Macau in 78 and left there, as I have also stated from info supplied from Leif Norberg the car was in Macau in 77, however I now think Leif may be one year out. I will call Leif in the next few days to check this. Zakspeed entered cars in Macau 77 and 78, to me he has his years wrong??
I appreciate everyones input here as getting to the bottom of the history is very important to me.

Hi again,

I also think that calling any one car the "Heyer Car" is hard to do, as I am sure Heyer drove most Gp2/Gp5 cars Zakspeed during this period. Heyer drove my car at some point.

Wooding escorts were driven by Jörg Obermoser and Gerhard Schüler in 1972 in the DRM. Any chance they went bust in 1973??

I found the pictures of the dismantled car I was offered, the bodywork was all white with a blue stripe down the side. Sponsor was VARMA Vakuuttaa. And the name I can hardly read, Petta Artro I think.

That all fits together, you can see this same chassis# in the photos in one of my previous posts, this car is waiting for restoration one day as I understand.

I can't believe it, all these escorts this makes it even more confusing Even a Mampe liveried car.

One car I find particularly interesting though, is the car of John Erik Oberg, as it has exactly the same rear wing as the Ringshausen escort.

If you take a look at the pic of the programme you will see in the top photo on the left the Zakspeed Ford Mustang (I was always wondering where that went to!) and in the back a white escort with a blue stripe on the front wing. It looks a lot like the 'ZAK G5E 60888' car.

It seems we need a Danish/Scandinavian racing expert on here !
