Wheel covers - banned or not?

Was the "banning" of the wheel covers an official rulebook ban or a "gentlemans agreement" type ban as it seems several teams including Force India and Ferrari have covers which look like the wheel covers, certainly didn't have them fitted in testing at Barcelona.

No covers...

Maybe they are just new wheels, incorporating the aero design of the covers but integral to the wheel construction. In which case they would be perfectly legal and within the rules, even within the spirit of the rules.....

Seems they're made of the same stuff as the wheel rims so don't count as an aero addition.

Wheel covers are banned for 2010, however Ferrari got round this ruling by making the cover part of the wheel...

That's very clever, to be honest.
Getting around the rules and nobody will be able to copy it.

Dastardly clever, I'd say.

Good job by Ferrari, apparently noone else was paying attention. Covers like these have been run on Porsche RS Spyder LMP2 cars before, but IIRC they had issues with brake cooling.

It was one of the first things Steve Matchett talked about on the practice show yesterday. SPEED had a couple really good square shots of the wheel and the opening for the wheel nut is pretty small and there's a lot of vanes running out from center on the Ferrari wheels this season. Will be interesting to see if it leads to an agreement through FOTA about how wheels will be made in the future or if it remains a free area.

Why does the Ferrari in the first pic appear to have sword sticking out of the top of the airbox? Is this to prevent Michael Schumacher from attempting to steal a ride in it, when no one is looking?

It's Alonso's GPS antenna, so he doesn't get lost along the way.

Thanks for the explanaition, I thought the sword theory was a bit too drastic. Alosno will certainly need that in Bahrain; he won't want to get lost in the sand dunes.
