Cool suits

Are there any other ways to cool drivers down , it seems to be a problem we have at clipsal every year with the suits failing mid race or not at all, should all cars have the passengers side window removed?

they need to let the put an antifreeze in the water, something safe Propylene Glycol. They freeze up or get blocked buy little bits of ice. Taking windows wont do much at all, you need to be able to draw the heat out of the body.

Courtney said his helmet blower also failed, so he had no air as well.

Where is the PMM air conditioning system? Mr Ceprnich spent a lot of time working on that system... why cant it be mandated?

Take the passenger side window out?? Try getting the engineers to agree to that one, it would probably cost 1 sec per lap...

I knew someone was gonna say that!!!

While there may be an element of toughening up, reality is, these guys are going a lot faster in confined in a concrete street circuit with little air movement, significantly heavier safety gear (suits/full face helmets/balaclavas/socks/etc), probably more closed cars, eg side window glass for aero, window nets, etc.

Anyway, at the end of the day, if cool suits/helmet blowers/air con fails in these situations, it's just poor preparation, just like failed engines/gearboxes/diffs are...

I've often wondered, and again on the weekend, what the trade off between the engine power loss for a small A/C system versus having a driver at full peak performance for the full race would be - just because he is cooler. ??

Why not get sharp and run the air con unit by battery?

Surely an electrical drain on the engine is less than the power loss driving a compressor would be?

There would even been time to change batteries during a pitstop as the new refuelling rigs seem slower than a wet week

No, but they didnt do long races in a hot concrete jungle either. I dont think they use the suits all the time, just places like adelaide

Why don't they go back to a mixture of block ice and normal ice cubes with water instead of dry ice we never had issues with block ice in the USA in a Trans-am car there was still plenty of ice left after 1 1/2 hrs in the car.

It's only a touring car. If they were racing at Phillip Island is one thing, but the Adelaide circuit is mostly fairly slow -> less aero.

It should be simple enough for TEGA to require that all the cars remove the front driver and passenger windows on hot days.

In the past, many teams felt the trade-off to opening the windows partway or all the way by choice was worth it when they had winding ones. So what's different now?

(one of the dodgiest show cars seen in v8 supercars, however if that is a true indication of the "banned" too-good AU aerokit and not a designers styling exercise it's quite neat, i take it this car was converted into a production race car)

"Designed with the assistance of Ford's Cray Supercomputer and thoroughly tested at Lockheed Martin's aeronautical wind tunnel in the United States, the AU Falcon is a significant technical advance over last year's Bathurst-winning EL-model Falcon, particularly in the areas of handling and safety.

Aerodynamic drag is 10 percent down on the previous model, while lateral stiffness is 22 percent better in the AU.

"The EL Falcon was a very effective car on high speed circuits the AU will build on that strength and will be better on the slower, tighter circuits as well," Glenn Seton says.

"I think most people will agree the AU V8 Supercar is the best-looking Touring Car Australia has seen," Greg Harbutt enthuses.

"Once it wins a couple of races, it will look even better we race to win and I have no doubt that this car will achieve that for us." "

They are doing just fine.
