In-house V customer?

I just wonder what people think of these choices that midgrid teams have made. For example BJR has an engine shop and all/most of the machines needed to build their own cars but decided to go the customer route.

By doing things in-house, the costs to just put race cars on track could be more tightly controlled. But what of the spend required to be actually be competitive doing things in-house versus customer cars?

BJR is a very good example...
They have the management expertise to run a team.
They now utilise WP products to ensure they have competitive equippe.
They now have two good drivers, in good cars, and so long as everyone behaves, good results could follow.

Team Kelly
Have gone from WP technology to Perkins technology, and the packages (car/driver) did struggle at Clipsal compared to their earlier days in WP equipment.

PCR vs SBR.
PCR with 888 technology ran door to door with the factory backed SBR (a multiple championship winner). PCR are a fully outsourcing operation compared to SBR who manufacture everything.
