SHOCK: Holden plan to axe aussie Commodore
It looks like the Australian Commodore is going to be no more: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-11-0...0/?site=sydney
http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/s...-1226184180442 After all the flak Ford fans have had to put up from Holden fans talking about Ford not being committed to Australia, etc, etc, this is a RED letter day for Ford fans! So what will be racing against Ford in V8 Supercar in the future? It would appear it is going to be front wheel-drive based whatever it is. |

Unlikely as the current planning for the next model is well advanced and that should last until the end of this decade, as for the car of the 2020's who knows.
Perhaps the Cruze is an indication of what's coming and looking at the sales figures for it at the moment it seems to be popular?? Oh, don't forget the CotF is the same no matter what car it's supposed to be, just hang different sheetmetal on the space frame which is rear wheel drive and the Cruze is doing well under the Chevy umbrella in the WTCC at the moment. |

If you had read the articles you would have noted that the 2014 Commodore is most likely to be the last. Don't think it will last until 2020...

This hooha seems to be about Holden closing down design and engineering, rather than manufacturing in Adelaide?
I thought it a lot more likely manufacturing would be gone long before closing design and engineering for Commodore and various other GM projects. |

Its all a bit interesting. Political leverage perhaps?
It wasnt long ago when the Australian design arm of GM were well acknowledged for their platform design which the VE and cars like the Camaro use. Noises from the US were pointing to using our design and platform wore widely throughout the GM world when it came to rear drivers. Still, even if they design the car overseas, I cant see it affecting the V8 supercars. There will probably still be a car called a Commodore and the panels will fit the COTF. If all that does happen, I wonder who would design HSV's then... someone from England? |

2014 is the new platform, which will run for another 7 years or so, so who knows, that is too far into the future.

By the time the model after the VE has done its time cars will be electric/hybrid, 4 pot turbos. What will a V8 supercar look like? I'd suggest they will only be called "supercars", given the V8 may be a thing of the past in 2020.

Holden's Official Response
Gee... someone spoke out of school during an EBA negotiation, and has somehow gotten the brand on the front page of the Financial Review amongst others... Two EBA failures in a week... top stuff that!! |

confirmed or even happened yet. I would wait before the gloating starts. They are actually talking about the platform of the car. The 2014 car will be the 5th generation Commodore. The First generation - 1978 (VB) to 1988 (VL) The Second generation - 1988 (VN) to 1997 (VS) The Third generation - 1997 (VT) to 2006 (VZ) The Forth generation - 2007 (VE) Most have spanned out over 9 years or so, but the more modern variants will more then likely be shorter. Even so, the platform for the 2014 car should still see it reach 2020. If after that time neither the Falcon or Commodore are built here it will be a national disgrace, regardless of whether your blood bleeds red or blue. Car manufacturing employs thousands of aussies and is important to Australia. |

Design and engineering don't get government protection.

Why it is a red letter day is that Holden is now in the same boat, one avenue of criticism of Ford is now at an end. As for how long the 2014 Commodore lasts, the Holden Chief said a little while back that the lifespan of Australian Holden models is going to be shortened. Also, the last Australian designed Commodore might have a short life span if the Australian Government introduces similar regulations to what the US Government has put in place. I too think it would be a shame if we lost either the Falcon or Commodore. |

What annoys me is the lack of govt vision in helping to implement and encourage investment in infrastructure so that we could run our vehicles much more cheaply on natural gas instead of selling the gas off to overseas interests at five cents per litre........we could keep the commodores and Falcons into the future.........thoughts anyone???

Great bluescope, if they can find a way to get the gas out without stuffing up good farm land and the water table.
But that of course applies to gas for export as well as local use. Howls of protest here, but the most efficient way to use the gas is gas turbine electricity generation and run electric cars. |

Tony, gas is piped into Sydney from Santos in SA (2 pipelines actually, one natural gas, the other ethane). Need another from Karratha and another from the Timor Sea to connect them up........possibly. |

Only 3% these days I think bluesport. They once had a controlling interest of over 30%.
