Those new safety rules are like what GTE did.

If it means 800km, the race will be about 176 or 177 laps.

500 miles race? We NASCAR now!

Then again, having a longer race in Fuji to supplement the loss of Suzuka 1000km is a good thing. Nothing value was lost!

These cars always put on good races at Fuji. People may not like the track layout much, but it is a good 'racing track' as in there's room and corners that have action.

Yeah I think 500-mile race at Fuji as Suzuka 1000km replacement is not a bad idea after all. "Fuji 500 miles" itself also has the history back in 1977-1992 for various sports car races.

It would be nice if Fuji has less Tilke influence that F1 left them behind years ago after a major reprofiling. Also, they should have finished the oval so we can have NASCAR too!

Still, having a longer race to supplement the loss of the 1000km race is good for Super GT.

I increasingly feel like I need to make a history video about Fuji Speedway

Jp.motorsport.com reports that Super Formula might introduce an air restrictor equipped engine from 2019.
This is a big news that's because this means NRE engine (fuel restrictor equipped engine) will be abolished in Super Formula.
Perhaps, similar movements might be seen also in SGT.

I wonder how that will tie into ITR/DTM and plans for Class 1?

I feel that the Class 1 rule proposal will soon be a bust when NRE are abolished.

On the other hand, will Super GT use GT3 engines for GT500 class as a potential replacement?

If they got back to GT500 meaning 500bhp limit and stock block engines, then yes, that's a sound option. The GT500 name is currently a misnomer, given that the current engines make more like 600bhp.

Granted, we remember how that went last time when by 2007 Nissan ditched the turbo charged V6 out of the 350Z and made the "450Z" with a racing version of the VK45 V8.

These guys have made more than 500hp for a long time. They're over 600hp now but the cars have always had good power. Going back to stock blocks is probably not going to happen imo.

Nevermind over 600hp, they're "about 650hp", which given the historic lowballing of GT500 is probably closer to 700hp. Even with reduced downforce this year DTM-derived aero regs create very draggy cars, so to reach 190+mph in race trim requires a lot of power. Imagine this with another 50hp and that would be in the same ball park.

If SF ditches the NRE then SGT will follow suit, there's no way Honda & Toyota are developing two engines and leaving Nissan with just one to focus on. It would be the final nail in the coffin for Class 1 as well. Yet again, it comes down to cash - making 2L 4-pots produce 650+hp for up to 6 hours on a fuel and fuel flow allowance is not cheap. Going back to air restrictors would make the engines a lot cheaper, and potentially offer a variety of sizes and layouts (but in the current climate, it will probably won't).
