Alton Towers race circuit
I've always been intreged by the "Alton Towers" listing on RacingCircuits.net but there's no details. I picked up an old programme at the Autosport Show which had a lot of info in it (something programme writers today could learn from...). As expected, it seemed to be 'bikes only, ran from '53 to the late fifties (?) and I can trace the layout to the current theme park (basically around the swan-ride lake). Does anyone upkeep an record of UK circuits on the web any more, who I could supply details to - RacingCircuits.net seems to be mothballed...

You may be referring to the circuit a couple of miles from Alton. I'm not sure if it was ever used for racing, but it is still used to give historic racing cars a run (which I assume are the Bamford's cars, as the estate where the track is located is in the heart of the JCB dynasty's world)
You can see the perimeter road to the lake in this link: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl...45319&t=k&z=15 |

Interesting! - but they ae different circuits, albeit a couple of miles apart. The fifties 'bike circuit is actually in the centre of the current theme park about here - http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl...,0.009613&z=17
Roughly triangular with the start (?) straight running along the top of the map, then turning right around the lake with the swan-boats in, down to Towers Hairpin at the bottom of the picture, then back up (along the trees) to the start/finish straight. I'll try and scan the plan from the programme later. Last edited by graeme; 11 Jan 2009 at 19:55. |
