I like the new lights better than the 918 style.

Quite amazing how much downforce 919 generates(not much less than R18 and quite more than TS050) despite almost not having front wing flaps!

How much downforce is generated by the undertray?

Difficult to say precisely, but the undertray does have a very significant impact on overall downforce

GasperG has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
Here is a nice article about how 919 technology will be used in Mission E:
http://www.greencarcongress.com/2016...7-porsche.html

Some more details about 919 battery:
Quote:
For energy storage for the 800V 919 system, Porsche chose a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery comprising hundreds of cylindrical cells seven centimetres high and 1.8 centimeters in diameter (18700) from A123 Systems. The cells were specially developed for this motor racing application and combined into compact modules using a special welding procedure.
and about the battery cooling system:
Quote:
The fluid cooling system, developed using a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) system, dissipates the waste heat so effectively that even at full throttle only very small temperature differences are detectable across the entire battery. The thermal and electrical loads on the individual cells in the system are evenly balanced, which has a positive effect on the durability of the battery as a whole.

Porsche will only have 2 cars at Le Mans next year, as will Audi.

I can't say that I'm surprised. But then again, I can't say that I'm surprised that the US Gov't is trying to milk everything that they can out of VAG whilst allowing GM to basically walk on 50-100 counts of manslaughter.

Not really that surprising, to be honest. I'm sure Audi and Toyota will have similar approaches.

Also, any speculation as to what the third hybrid system will be?

Although disapointing it means that some privateers can have an entry they wouldn't have otherwise which is good.

Think VW will still have 3 cars in WRC as all the factories are doing that even newcomer Toyota (although starting midseason)

The problem is that the 919 will essentially be 4 years old, whilst both Toyota and Audi will have a car that is only in its second year of development.
2018 will see that even out, but 2017 is going to be a "complicated" year for Porsche IMO.

To put a positive spin on this, so far the strategy (evolution) has worked for Porsche. The question is how much development potential exists in the current chassis? Lots of knowledge of how to make this chassis work is a good thing. With an even further restriction on aero packages for next year, it is likely better to polish what they have vs limited development options with something totally new for just one year. The big question is how far forward will Audi and Toyota move.

Clearly there will be some development devoted to the 2017 car, but the real focus for Porsche is probably on 2018 and beyond.

I think they wil be fine barring the strange and unexpected that can happen to anyone, anytime. They might have more of a fight on their hands but, it won't be anything that they can't work through. As they say though, "that's why you run the race." It's all speculation and conjecture and means nothing once the green flag has dropped. It should hopefully be fun for us to watch though.

Andreas Seidl, Team Principal: “What a race – once again all three manufacturers were on the podium. We managed to extend our lead in both championships, which means another step on the way to our mission of defending both World Championship titles. Congratulations to the entire team for this challenging weekend and race. Today it was difficult to get all the decisions right. For the number 1 car it worked perfectly and they deserved to win the race. For the number 2 crew our strategy didn’t work out in the changing weather conditions. On top of that, we had an incident when a LMP2 car touched the rear of our car. Afterwards we focussed on bringing home points for the championship. Also on this special circuit we have proven that our car can win a race. This makes us confident for the remaining rounds of the championship.”

Whats also interesting for me, althought maybe they are not relate but the #2 car always seems like the tortoise doesn't it?

Didn't they have the same game at Nurburgring/ Le Mans where the 2 car just looked like also-rans until the 1 car hit trouble, and suddenly the 2 car had pace.

Well...It looks like the 919 has lost its speed advantage . All things continue (at least to me) to point toward a very difficult 2017.
I continue to be very concerned that they have not yet nominated a Technical Director. It's now been almost 7 months since Hitzinger left, and still no replacement.

They were just fine in FP1. And we know that with the way that the rules are in regards to range and how quick Fretias post LM has been to grab for full course yellows, a badly time FCY can screw over Audi just like it did at Nurburgring and Mexico City.
