JAP Engine Wanted

Last year i delivered a 500 chassis to Spa which to me looked like a couple of bits of very rusty round tube that i thought would never ever be rebuilt and would just sit in this chaps garage as prop to talk about the good old days. There is a story behind the chassis his Dad built and raced the car in period."I think"!.Right so I'm back at Spa last week and a voice shouts at me across the paddock." IAIN IAIN !!!. As usual don't have a clue who this chap is. Its the proud owner of the 500 chassis and he shows me the pictures of his progress which is just fantastic ,this guy means business. His problem now is that he needs a JAP 500 engine.!!. He has tried all the 500 clubs and contacts and i just thought i would try and ask my friends on here. " you never know.??

They do come up on ebay. Search "speedway". "JAP" produces lots of far east motorcycle tat! Has he got a Norton box ? The "dolls head" is the one to get, and they are not impossible to find.

I knew what Iain meant when I saw the thread title, but my instinctive response was as Als, nip down the breakers and look for Datsun badges!

Cameron racing engines . . . .

Morgan's used a v-twin JAP in a variety of guises - both ohv and sv, water and air cooled.

500cc F3 cars used the 4B speedway engine. 4Bs are quite hard to find these days despite a growing trend towards using Norton engines, just as it was in period.

As I understand it Ewan Cameron might make a batch of 4B engines if sufficient orders are forthcoming. Otherwise Delta's man could try Speedway Services (0553 829197) who occasionally have engines for sale. If he's not too fussy it might be easier to source a later 84S engine which although not strictly period the 500 OA will allow in their invitation class.

As far as gearboxes are concerned the vast majority used a Norton box. Very broadly speaking the pre war dolls head box was used until roughly 1951 when the laydown box from the featherbed became the norm and from 1954 the AMC type was widely used. All appear on ebay from time to time.

I have seen JAP engined speedway bikes for sale on ebay, top riders started using jawa engines in the late sixties,i saw a rotrax/jap circa early 50s for around 3500 pounds recently, that is quite a iconic bike, chrome frame etc. I think their could quite a lot of 4 stud jap engines in grasstrack bikes, again in this case i would think the value is the engine.

I need a 500 cc 4B JAP engine as well for my Belgian 500 cc racer.

Interesting to hear that a Norton dollshead gearbox tends to go with it.
These are getting very thin on the ground, luckyly I have a spare one from my bike collection.
