Weren't Holden, Mazda, BMW and Nissan all involved around that time? Ford too, albeit from a distance.

Well I wasn't born back then, but I know there was no support around then. I think with some brains and good racing it will keep going. As long as there are other sponsors around it will be ok I am guessing

By your definition Erebus was a manufacture supported team in 2016, as was prodrive and we know thats not true.

Dealer support is different to manufacturer support

Sure, dealer support existed.

But all those marques mentioned had the manufacturer committing resources of some kind to race teams.

It may have been dollars, access to parts, assistance with homolgation, etc.

In the context of early 1980s touring cars, manufacturer support could be seen in the form of special bodyshells, in-kind parts support, and even money.

Manufacturer support has certainly evolved through time, but it has always been three albeit in different forms.
