The reason for this was essentially because there was NO TV feed for that session so any commentary was relying on what the team could see out of the window, on the rolling CCTV footage and the timing screens.
The accident happened right at the bottom of the camera's view, most likely it will have only picked up the marshals on the grass and smoke.
Matt you're almost entirely correct - We spotted it on the circuit CCTV after hearing via a colleagues team radio that there was a car in the wall and a sizeable fire and walked down to the booth (some considerable distance!) to explain to John what we could see and what (very little) we knew - He put me on air at that point - the other point was that it took a LONG time for the red flag to come out for that incident - certainly after I was on air - I'd estimate arouind 4-5 minutes - A worryingly long time in fact

I actually sent a text to Paul about that accident - I was standing on the bank on the inside of the circuit at pit in - although I couldn't identify which car it was when I sent it. It was clear the commentators had little or nothing to work on......

And I walked from the booth to the scene of the crash...shot some images on my iPhone and returned to the booth to show the damage.
