Formula Renault Eurocup 2008
The Formula Renault Eurocup season is about to begin shortly and testing shows Australian Daniel Ricciardo is the man to beat in Team SG formula.
Daniel was fastest in Valencia last month and was just resently quickest man in Barcelona. He has already made his mark on being the man to beat this year. Strangely we haven't had much discussion about what is a very significant series below F3 and it's bigger 3.5 brother, well other than NADR posting some testing times and a calendar!!!
As we're headed towards the big UK rounds can anyone give us a flavour of who's done what to date, who's likely to be hot or not at Silverstone? |

I'd say Bottas and Ricciardo will be at the front again

I know that there are 48 cars or something ridiculous like that in the series... which makes for some hairy racing!
I would agree that Bottas and Ricciardo should be the front - and I will also watch out for Caldarelli, Ramos and Smith. |

Dean Smith's in the Eurocup? He's got to be the weekends favourite?
Tobias Hegewald was pretty handy on ocassions last season so could he be a contender this weekend and also be he a genuine title contender this year? |

42 cars - and only one retired yesterday. Amazing!
Hats off to Bottas - I didn't see the race (I'm going to Silverstone today, didn't go yesterday) but he won by 12+ seconds in a 15 lap race. Incredible. Also hats off to Dean Smith (18th after starting 42nd due to an illegal car) and Cesar Ramos (24th after starting 38th due to crashing in qualifying) - they both overtook a bucketload of people. |

That's right kmj, I was thinking that either Smith's really very good or there's a lot of wealthy numpties in that series for him to make that much progress!
Bottas was supreme, he made a good start and then just drove away from the field. There was an interesting scrap for 2nd, which iirc the guy who set fastest lap joined? My pick, Hegewald started and finished 10th I think, he looked promising last year but in Bottas he seems to have some kind of meteor as a teammate which won't do him much good! |

Bottas was mighty indeed on the Saturday, and had one hell of a ding-dong with Ricciardo on the Sunday. Ricciardo got past him on the last lap with a lovely move going into Abbey - great stuff!

Out of interest, Ricciardo's an Aussie right?
What was the rest of the top 10 order? |

Great to see Daniel Ricciardo (Aussie) winning races on different circuits all over Europe - would be good to see him go head to head with Valtteri Bottas...

Smith needs to get some points this weekend or his ch'ship will be a right off. He was disqualified from starting second at Silverstone due to technicalties but he made up over 20 places in each of the two races, setting the 3rd fastest race lap. Fortec and Hitech Junior aren't doing as well as I thought they would in the Eurocup to date, Singleton and Bacheta are yet to score either. I'm rooting for the Brits :-). Bottas is one to look out for in the future definately, I think he has won all races in the NEC this year too.

Yeah Bottas is a class act, but there's another half dozen guys who also look very, very good prospects for the future.
Eurocup is such a hard series because there's so many quality teams/entries, but as long as Smith remains competitive, surely the top finishes will follow for him? |
