That's when cars were really cars, and the drivers were real men.

Senna in a turbocharged JPS Lotus. Sigh....
Could only be better if he were going thru Eau Rouge in the rain or throwing sparks. |

Hey, men in racing cars instead of kiddies in go-karts!
Brother, those were the days. Doesn't seem possible that Gilles could be gone 20 years now -- and real race cars could be gone for nearly 10 years. But think of this: what are the current generation going to call the "good old days"? Boy remember when we had only one car that could win races and we got up at 4:00 a.m. to see the same race we'd already seen four times in the past four times ... we never knew how Rubens' car would break this week ... Give me back my Gilles! |

Laffite - sometimes nice guys do finish first. Actually, if the WDC was won a loyalty, respect and a generally nice attitude, Laffite would have won every championship from 1976-86.
But he made up for that by also being a damn fast driver, absolutely fair and a genuine race winner. |

LOL Lizz!
I'd add a heap of sarcasm myself, but my imagination has been affected by watching(not doing it myself)a sport(alegedly)on TV. |

Nice picture of Watson's Mac- surely one of their prettiest cars ever. Did they ever find out why it exploded in Italy (I think?). I was watching the race on telly at a tender age, the commentary team didn't know what had happened.

So, when's the funeral?
(It seems F1 has already died in some peoples minds...) (It's a rhetorical question BTW) Last edited by Aussiefan; 7 May 2002 at 11:31. |

Thumbs up from the Paddock Club.
Ecclestone: Schumacher Dominance Not a Turn-Off Formula One ringmaster Bernie Ecclestone has insisted that Michael Schumacher's dominance of Formula One this season has strengthened the sport - despite claims that it is now a turn-off. Four-time World Champion Schumacher has eased to victory in four of this year's five races prompting claims the Formula One has lost its appeal. But Ecclestone has hit back and said that Schumacher's success has made the sport more interesting as the battle to prove he is beatable heats up. "It's a package," Ecclestone told the Observer Sport Monthly magazine. "At the moment Ferrari have the best package. The best car, the best engine, most recently they also have had the best tyres, they've undoubtedly got the best driver, so that package works. "Now if you went back to last year and took Michael out of the equation, it would have been very different." Ecclestone believes that Schumacher's position in Formula One is similar to that previously held by Muhammed Ali in boxing - in that everybody wants to beat the champion. "Michael motivates the team and that is not such a bad thing because if you look back in nearly all forms of sport, for example when boxing was at its peak, Muhammad Ali was the one," he added. "People were waiting to see who was going to beat him. "People like to see a superstar, and then who is going to beat him. At Imola recently the conversation was all about who is going to beat Michael. "And that's the interest. Can somebody beat him? So this race is over, and no one can beat Michael but the next race comes up. Can someone beat him here? Will it be his brother? There is always someone out there ready to beat the star." |

I just think to myself "What would Gilles say if he saw F1 today?" But my mother doesn't let me use those words.
