I tried the POM in an old 4wd Audi 100 quattro circa 1989 vintage a few years ago, it was painfully slow, I was overtaken on the Club straight by Ray Barnett in his 1908 Knox, and it was soaking wet! Incidentally if you 'lose it' in an old quattro is is very hard to catch it and correct, all the power is transferred to the front as soon as the rear breaks away, on the third time of trying I caught it in time NOT to spin! (Shame faced, as I had already driven 120,000 miles in the old nail and never found out!)

Pray enlighten us some more..
The SD1 weighs ? It's 2.6 litre engine puts out ? bhp It was born when ? It's L is roughly ? inches Your ideal answers should be ..900kgs, 200bhp, 1978 & 82 ! As a team of SD1's would we be a 'pride' or a 'gaggle'? RT Last edited by relativtortoise; 3 Feb 2004 at 22:04. |

weight approx. 1200kg BHP approx. 136. Hm! They intentionally put a soft cam on it so it wouldn't embarrass the V8 - which they'd already strangled. It is possible to get a hotter cam and get it up to 150bhp. Mine is 1981 - they do come older (if you can find one that hasn't rusted away!!!) L:- Ah! This is its good point, approx 90". Hence why I use it as a caravan. Plenty of space for the air bed!!! A team of them. Er........An Infestation of SD1s, A pack of Rovers, a corrosion of SD1s... The car could have been a peach - an updated version of the old 2.5 litre triumph engine with a Riley designed gearbox, but it sort of petterred out from there. Dad can tell stories of a red 2.6 litre SD1 that seemed to attract accidents .....

There was an Bastos liveried twin plenum V8 SD1 touring car in the TWR release sale which the liquidators had about two months back and I did consider that a contender for POM. As it happens it was estimated at about £6-8000 and made something nearer to £30,000 on the day.

Wow, what a lot of dosh for an SD1! You could buy the finest Alvis 12/50 in the world for that and still have enough left for a GN/Nash kit of parts!

It is a lot of dosh, but I think your estimate of Alvis12/50 and a GN/Nash kit more than a touch low Mike.
Even though prices have tended to fall back lately. Chris |

As to living with a 2600 SD 1. Poor old RTM758W. In its first week it got hit by a yoghurt sales van, a month or so later by a drunken lass after pub turning out, then another lady in the snow, finally had a development RB211 aircraft engine being fork lifted to the scrap yard, dropped on its roof. Within a year of manufacture, it did not have an original panel left in the body. Continuous history ?

Hello All, just on a visit from the Marshals forum. I have been thinking about volunteering for the "Pom" but am unsure what it actually is. I know some of you are wary of putting out details on an open forum however I seek not great details of the organissation of the event or who is involved but merely a rough outline of what the event consists of. At present I don`t know whether it is soley a race meeting or a combination of race, spring, hillclimb, drag, autotest, sporting trial, etc. Can some one give me a bit of a clue and who knows you may see me at Silverstone soon, thanks in advance.

PM me with an Email address and I'll let you know more. As with most VSCC Events it is excellent - in this case it is a mix of driving tests in the morning with High Speed Trials in the afternoon. As you'll have guessed from the comments above, it has a wide range of cars from Edwardians to modern supercars (a Noble M30 last year). Duncan |

Having finally got permission ....
The write up of last year's Pomeroy trophy is available in a low quality scanned version here:
Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4 More details courtesy of Google. It provides a good idea of the fun that can be had at a VSCC event. Why not come along for the Marshals Training (10:30 onwards - details from the Competition Department at the VSCC) or the main event itself? PM me for more info. Duncan |

OBVIOUSLY THE BEST CAR FOR THE POM IS TALBOT 105.IT USED TO DOMINATE SO THEY CHANGED THE RULES SO THOSE F.N. KIT CARS COULD WIN SOMETHING.

What were the rule changes?
As a relative newcomer to the Pom, and still trying to understand it (perhaps that is my mistake ), could you explain the rule changes?
I remember the Talbot 105 "Fox and Nichol" replica team beating the previously dominant 8C Alfas in the last of the Coys Festivals, but I put that down to an admittedly superb car being brilliantly driven (who was the F3 driver that was awesome through the complex - a total mix of understeer and oversteer). Look forward to seeing you there. As flag Marshals we always smile at Rescue Crews, but you can recognise us by Mrs B's laugh and our impression of VSCC branded Teletubbies. Thank you for supporting our meeting - we are dependent on specialist support like yours. Duncan |

Teriffic Event
Another terrific VSCC Event.
There were far more Pre-War cars than in previous years. Well done to the VSCC and to all who took part, Marshalled, organised etc. Particular thanks to all of those that came up and said "Hello", and sorry to those of you who we didn't have sufficient time to talk to before it was time to flag. Nice to discover who Relative Tortoise is, and even my own part in naming you. Some photos are available. Duncan PS Non-smutty captions for this picture welcome Last edited by BugEyed; 22 Feb 2004 at 18:14. |

Silverstone was as cold as ever...
Discovered an 'outer circuit' road to BugEyeds' marshalls post. Outer Siberia, I think it was called. A chat and then I was ordered to leave by another marshall across the way. As if anything on earth could distract either BugEyed when doing their duty. Absurd. Met an old friend who gave me a real boy racer experience up and down the runway in a blown Bentley 5.25. Then home in time to watch England take the Calcutta Cup with some ease. Not a bad day, really! Peter |

OK Peter, it was cold, but at least it was dry. Having posted my Pom comments on the wrong thread, I get an e-mail from a guy telling me I cannot tell a Mercer from a Stutz. I am often wrong, but can I refer him to BugEyed's excellent photo of the engine and radiator. It is a wonderful car, can I afford one ? Probably not, but one can dream......

Where else could one see such a mix of cars competing together! High spots; Arriving at the braking test and admiring the strange assortment of black lines - one set of which continued straight thro' - and over - the cones, following the Mercer thro' Woodcote - wow!, ten laps wheel to wheel with a 4 litre Vanden Plas - he would out-drag me down the straights but I could out-corner him. Great fun, and a perfect example of what makes the VSCC special. One question, already asked in the other place. Where was the bucket for donations to the marshalls?? It was always on the gate before. |

Well, no risk of my needing to honour the promise to PVMW of using an SDone next year by winning this years event....the braking test saw to that....one of the rear brakes appeared to snatch and I ended up broadside and next to the box.
To cap that on lap four of the forty minutes the clutch cable snapped...no detrimental effect as I could limit the changes and just snick the changes by balancing the revs in fact my lap times remained roughly the same and I got my laps in. The good news is that I managed to bump start it in the paddock and never come to a stop again until home...came pretty close a couple of times. Good to catch up on some of the gossip while queueing for tests. RT |
