meetings this weekend

Has anyone noticed just how many meetings there are this weekend and in contrast how many may or will be short of marshals? I know this is old posts dragged up BUT....

Seeing as last year I went to Gurston, had a great time and was made to feel very welcome I decided that I would go back again this year. Consequently, I didn't look at anywhere else. More to the point, I can guarantee Gurston will not be short of people so there must be a message in there somewhere!

Yes! and apart from BSB at Cadwell most circuits are holding car meetings.

PS There are also two one day meetings, both Monday, at Anglesey and Mallory.

Paul I think the MG Car Club are at Mallory on Sunday, the Chief marshal is John Watson. Conact him through the MG Car Club web site.

If Julian Floyds web site is up to date, on Saturday there is: Brands, Snetts, Lydden, Oulton, Silverstone, Rockingham and Gurston, Sunday it is: Gurston, Harewood, Silverstone, Thruxton, Rockingham, Mallory, Brands, Snetts, Oulton and Donington and on Monday, Donington, Oulton, Brands, Pembrey, Castle Combe, Thruxton and Lydden and they wonder why they are short of marshals - hmm Balders

According to last week's BRSCC newsletter, every circuit in the country has at least one day of action over the weekend either in the form of cars, bikes, or Rallycross.
And that doesn't include sprints or kart meetings, of which there's a good few too.

Not quite up to date, it would appear - qualifying at Donington on Saturday, then race day on Sunday. Monday at Donington is a separate meeting completely.

Which is why I will be there, but NOT at any event on Monday. (no offense meant to any events being held on Monday)

I've taken a days holiday (to travel down on friday) will enjoy the hospitality of Gurston, and then use the bank Holiday to have a leisurely drive home. NO WAY I'm marshalling on the Monday aswell!!!!!

Just like Woolley (and others), I'm picking and chosing my events rather than just filling every weekend. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm does that tell me something????

I'm no good at DIY and get bored if there's no motorsport, but.......

there are only so many hours that I can commit to my hobby before it starts to become a second (unpaid!!) job.

We (as marshals) may well be much appreciated (as has been proven by certain championships) but we only have so many hours in a week that are free.

One day the Brown stuff will be distributed by the whirly thing.........and meetings will be cancelled, but until that happens.............

Nothing will change!!!!

And I will still peruse my volunteering forms in January, will volunteer for what I think I will be able to attend but........

if push comes to shove.....
and I have the choice of a sunny weekend at home as oppose to a boring weekend watching series of 6 or 7 cars.......

guess what my choice will be!!!!!

If you can't entertain me, then I won't marshal for you.

You would think the MSA would have learned by now. Given that in the past we've seen circuits struggle to attract marshals when there has been two or three major meetings on over a weekend, to run this level of meets, especially on a bank holiday weekend is being ridiculously optimistic. This is going to be one of those things where nothing is going to be done until a meeting gets cancelled, or a competitor gets killed or seriously injured through lack of marshalling manpower. At which point, saying "I told you so" is not going to be a lot of good.

It's the clubs who run meetings, not the MSA!

Based on what criteria?

Taking this issue a step further, let's add to that list of criteria a requirement that there be adequate marshals available to run an event safely.

Firstly, how do we define 'adequate'?

Secondly, how can an organising club know how many marshals it will have available without announcing the event, issuing availability forms & awaiting reponse. Even that is only a rough guide, as there will be a (significant?) number of 'no-shows'; a volunteering form is not a legally-binding contract!

Now comes the difficult bit. Somebody, or a group of people, at the MSA would have to make the decision as to which events could & could not run, based on the number of marshals who may or may not be available. When would this have to be done - January at the latest? How could these decisions be made without protests of corruption/favouritism/bias, etc., from clubs whose permits were withdrawn?

The existing system isn't perfect, but it's the best we've got. Let's not slag off the MSA for the popularity of motor sport - maybe that's an indication that they are doing a good job!

I've just noticed rallyX at lydden!

what a joke this is - with the big rally on Epynt too where exactly are the marshals coming from?

It seems every circuit in the country is in action this week - how many meetings will fall below a 'safe' standard of marshals?

(followin on from my hans comments I should point out that a good number of experienced marshals is the most important bit of safety kit going - I'd rather fork out 600 quid to put in a marshals fund!)

Define a 'safe' standard please. It seems the MSA stewards who decide on the day what is safe have wildly differing opinions.

you all seem to have forgotten that the general public are on holiday too, not just marshals. It's got to be the best weekend in the entire year to fill circuits with paying punters, so i'm not surprised in the slightest that every circuit has summat going on....
