PS The car dropped because the rollbar broke. Lucky it didn't roll with the driver in it....

No it didn't. It dropped because the normal lift point inside the airbox was covered with a mesh (to prevent debris being drawn in to the engine) and was not immediately accessible, so the strop was hitched to something that appeared to be the lift point but couldn't take the weight.

I was wondering, idly, if it accelerated faster downward, than it does in a straight line on the ground?

As for whom hitched what to what, dunno I wasn't there, but it was an unfortunate accident, and luckily no one was hurt. I hope the poor car can be repaired.

For completeness: once of the Monaco fire marshals explained the cause of the fall on FB on Monday.

Mr Bloxham also commented on the state of the car - the tub got 'badly wrinkled' according to him, which sounds pretty bad

Interestingly, it's closer than I thought. High spec road cars might manage 0.8g (think Caterham) under acceleration. F1 cars might get close to 1g.

[off topic] at hillclimbs they measure the first 64feet because it's convenient for measuring acceleration. The best hillclimb cars, and some Audi Quattros fall just short of 2g[/off topic]
