Honda Crisis to Carry Into Moto GP?
So far, Moto GP has not had any fallout from the global economic crisis. At least not in terms of teams and manufacturers leaving. The FIM have announced that 19 bikes will take to the grid in 2009.
But, now I have found this: http://www.motogpmatters.com/news/20...hdrawal_o.html Basically, they are speculating on whether Honda could pull out of Moto GP. So let's have some discussion. Honda’s major costs are research and development, producing the bikes, keeping up a parts supply, the factory race team, the test team, and overhead. They have some sponsors that cover a portion of that. And the satellite teams have to lease their bikes and pay for spares. So there is some cost recapture. Hopefully the remaining cost makes it worth their while. It would be a huge blow to Moto GP to lose Honda when we only have a 19 bike grid. I have trouble seeing it happen myself, but at this stage nothing would surprise me. Last edited by jhansen; 17 Dec 2008 at 01:15. |

Honda has said in many releases that the MotoGP program is safe and usually have listed it before all other racing series. The R&D through racing, in various levels not just MotoGP, improves their street bikes and in times of a crunch people look to new areas to save money, and a bike can be a cheaper to buy and run vehicle. You may see them ask for more sponsor help for satellite teams to defray cost increases but them leaving is doubtful. Plus it does seem like Honda identifies themselves through bike racing more than any other form.
Plus the withdrawal from AMA was more a rules conflict than true cost-savings measure, correct? Last edited by broadrun96; 17 Dec 2008 at 05:14. |

Hopefully with F1 and AMA off the list there is more money to spend on MotoGP.
Bike sales are up by a huge amount, in Australia at least, and we are usually showing (following?) the same trends as worldwide. Jeff |

Honda left the AMA races for issues unrelated to money, I suspect. Mr. Blank had issues with DMG and it's management that were never going to be resolved. If you read JU's opinions in RRW, you can see what I mean.

News that Honda reduce or withdraw "all" two-wheel race activities other than Moto GP was reported in Japan, today.
Honda might withdraw the participation of the factory team in the Suzuka 8 hour endurance race, too. This is the news link. http://www.sanspo.com/sports/news/09...0500001-n1.htm |

Well, considering the Honda team in Australia was one of the few links to international series outside Yamaha in Australia, and that the Factory Honda team in Australia is an institution...
...it rocked MY world. And how SMALL on a global scale would the budget be? I mean really, they make the riders racer in all classes, the bikes a practically stock... etc etc |
