Wet weather protection...

I'm at Spa this weekend, what should I take to ensure that everything is kept dry? :P

I usually chuck a cloth over the camera, but maybe a bit more protection wouldn't go amiss...

Just eb careful you don't get condensation. Jessops used to do a special cover, not sure if they still do it. There's a few specialist companeis that provide the camera covers for the BBC etc but they can be seriously expensive. A cheap poncho cut up and a few elastic bands can do the job, seemed to work at the MotoGP on Sunday and that was seriously wet!

Dont use a red or yellow one though as the marshalls will string you up waving one of those about

After realising that most races I've shot at in the last two years have had rain at some point, including a couple of thunderstorms, I got a set of rain covers from wildlifewatchingsupplies.co.uk.

They come highly rated as a cheaper alternative to the full covers by Aquatech and similar, but I wouldn't advise them really. During quali at Le Mans they just got in the way and I ended up removing them and trusting Canon's weather sealing on the 1D.

Without that luxury, I'd say you'd be best just to have a good chammy over the top and keep drying water away from the lens mount and battery covers.

As of now, full Aquatech covers are pretty close to the top of my shopping list for next season.

i got given aquatech cover for my longer lens, i've not had to use it yet but they're supposed to be quite good. also good if you're not on deadline or if no-one is paying you for what you're shooting, is your camera bag...get all your gear in it nice and dry and wait for the rain to stop - works everytime!

Mike, do you have an old pair of waterproof over-trousers that you don't mind hacking the legs off? The best type are those with a side zip at the bottom of a leg as you can 'expand' that bit to cover the camera along with the lens, even on a monopod. You get two lens/camera covers out of one pair of trousers and they really work.

Thanks chaps - I've been looking to get one of those for months now, but could never find what I was looking for. Even the advertisers in the photo-mags never seemed to sell anything
