The future of DTM

With Mercedes-AMG gone for 2019, what's the future of DTM?

According to Wolfgang Ullrich, it's four cylinder engines.

Quote:

So it was just because one in Germany didn’t want it so we continued with V8, and now they are leaving.

Now we are all prepared that in ’19 we will have four-cylinder engines and we’ll be very, very close.

We have a four-cylinder engine running since about more than half a year. And we are working on the development of the engine. BMW as well.

So I think in ’19 engine-wise it will be quite identical.

It will for sure be 4 cylinder engines, my question is - who's going to join? Unless BMW and Audi field 10 cars each, it won't be good for DTM to continue with two manufacturers. Let's suppose both Audi and Mercedes will field 6 cars, the same as now. It will be 12-cars grid.
DTM are in talks with Japanese manufacturers from Super GT and I believe that's the right path. As far as I'm concerned, Berger is a good chairman, he's already implemented some reasonable regulations and I think his in a way radical view is the only chance for DTM to survive.

Super GT and DTM teams competing in each respective series. That's the dream and one I'd love to see.

The Japs will never accept those German rules. This is a no go. Not for all the team in China.

I think the series needs to attract foreign manufacturers other than the Japanese.

Either Alfa Romeo, Renault, or Jaguar would join in should Class One rules are made even cheaper.

Nissan and Toyota have implied in the past that the engine rules were the only things keeping them from joining DTM.

If the DTM don't find new manufacturers until the end of this year they might swich to GTE rules.

If they already talk about GTE the joint venture with SuperGT will never happen.

DTM GT = Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Grand Touring?

It makes more sense that they bring in the GT3 cars and race them in PWC style, with one driver.
However I'm with Glock, DTM should look at the V8 Supercars

I definitely agree that DTM should go Supercars path, to remain the fastest touring car series but with less aero dependant cars etc. This would be the best solution for DTM.

As I understand they will do GTE if no new manufacturer joins DTM in 2019, bacause Audi and BMW don't want to compete in a DTM with only 2 manufacturer.

If even one of the japanese SuperGT related manufacturers (Toyota, Nissan, Honda/Accura) wants to join the DTM next year, then Class One could introduced/continued as planned.

I wonder if all GTE manufacturers would be interested in participating in DTM, whether it would be completely officially or in a semi factory manner. But I believe DTM with GTE cars would be exciting.

GTE would also open the door to privateers again, which would be nice.

I hate DTM since the advent of the 4 door saloons and the new aerodynamics in 2005. A switch to GTE would make me watch again.

Let’s face it, the DTM is already effectively a GT championship, with high-powered coupes. If they can’t agree a common rule set with Super GT, why not adopt an existing set of regulations to which many manufacturers have already built cars?

They ready for Super GT rules IF an other manufaturer join the championship next season, but Audi and BMW will not held the DTM alone.

A 20 car grid for the DTM with GTE cars seems to me quite impossible honestly. If they want to switch to GT cars, GT3 is the better and fast solution (BMW, Audi and Merc already got the cars)

I said GTE not GT3. You could see 20 GTE cars only at Le Mans

You said "GT3 is the better and fast solution", and I reply that solution already exists in Germany. DTM with GT3 cars will no differ from ADAC GT. Same cars, same tracks even same race distance.

Btw BMW and Porsche could enter about 12 GTE cars alone, and I'm sure there will be 8-10 cars from other brands (Ferrari, Corvette, Aston, Ford or later McLaren). That move also might boost other factories to develop a GTE car, because if GTE cars will rece in Le Mans, in the WEC, in the IMSA sportcar championhip AND in the DTM too GTE will rise as a standard upper level formula in GT sport. Maybe SuperGT also will adopt GTE.
