Holy smokes. Seabass was on his way to a top spot in quali until he had a nasty nasty wreck. Seems like he's moving in the cockpit but that was as hard a hit as I've seen ever. Heart stopping.

Hope he's okay. Brutal.

Sounding like he's never lost consciousness and was awake and alert, but complaining of pain in his lower extremities.

Was taken straight to Methodist Hospital.

According to this he was, "awake and alert, he did not lose consciousness", so that is good news.

These are the Day 1 qualifying results and apart from Bourdais, who is classified as No Attempt, it looks like Veach is missing.

Per motorsport.com, Bourdais suffered multiple fractures to his pelvis and a broken hip, and is undergoing surgery at this time.

Glad that it's not worse than that, but I guess he could be out for a while, which is a shame as he was looking like challenging for pole. Would someone have to qualify the car tomorrow if they were going to replace him?

If there really isn't 33 qualified with an hour to go tomorrow, Tony George & Indycar will put together some field fillers to bump it up. Hopefully not Marty Roth, Milka Duno or Jimmy Kite...

I feel horrible for Bourdais though I'm glad he didn't suffer a head injury or serious back injury. Hopefully he can pull a Hinch and be back next year. He had the fastest car and a great shot at the pole and race win so it has to be devastating for him and the team. He'll miss Le Mans now too because of this.

Coyne said they have a backup car so I would imagine they will enter that with another driver rather than pull the entry. I'd be on the phone with Townsend Bell right now.

Those are some pretty major injuries but it certainly would have been the worst prior to SAFER barriers.

Just wishing Seabass the best right now.

Along with the SAFER barriers, credit also for the HANS device, and also the advances in construction of the car.

The impact was 100 G's on the cockpit recorders.

Some rain has moved through Speedway Indiana this morning, but the remainder of the day looks nice for some time trails.

All certainly played a role, but if that impact was on a concrete wall, regardless of the car and PPE, we'd be talking about something else this morning. Thankfully, we are not. It's certainty a reminder of how quickly this place can bite. 100 Gs!!!!

Probably behind the paywall. ESPN has the coverage today, but maybe try IndyCar.com? I don't know if that's available to international viewers for free...

Thank you very much gents. I realise it's frustrating for regular viewers to have to post stream links constantly, but for those who don't watch often, it's hard to remember what series does what. So thanks for posting those.

I just saw on Stefan's twitter that he will not be racing in place of Bourdais. Looks like James Davison will be filling the seat but the car will not be ready in time for qualifying today.

And Bourdais will be on crutches 6 to 8 weeks and then will have to go through rehab so he will miss the rest of the season.
