I didn't say the C was beautiful- just that I preferred it to the D, which to me isn't even close to the description. And IMHO the XKSS is worse! (Sorry JT) "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" ! How boring it would be if people didn't have different views on aesthetics...... |

C type, elegant.
D type, purposeful. XKSS, pug ugly. If I'm generous, of its time. |

We had better include one of these before JT, blows his top. Another well proportioned classic from the '50's. So unlike those .............

2016 was big year for Croft when the marshals finally got to welcome the arrival of their new state-of-the-art fire tender.

Reminds me of stories that my father told me about his time as an Auxiliary Fireman during WW2, doing driving duties. They had the brilliant idea of towing a water tank on a trailer behind his pump machine. Only problem was that the trailer didn't have any brakes, and in the icy winters the only way that he, and other drivers, could stop the combo (especially down hills) was to use the curb stones to help decelerate. Wasn't particularly successful, and didn't do the tyres much good either. Another story was about a punishment that would be handed out by the Station Commander to the firemen. They would be made to empty the coal bunker/s and whitewash the walls and floor, and then put the coal back. If the Commander saw a speck of coal dust above the level of the returned coal, then they would have to repeat the exercise, except this time they would have to also coat each lump of coal in the whitewash. Needless to say, they tried to be good boys and avoid punishment. And after a night fighting fires, he would go off to the day job running a business. |

Colin, I would tend to agree with that although perhaps a bit harsh to call the XKSS 'pug' ugly. I'm not struck by the beauty of the D type, but more by the impact that the car, especially in long nosed high tailfin form would have had - positively futuristic or other worldly at the time. Quote:
All of this, however, has taken us away from the thread title a bit so I may have to alter it a bit to accommodate the change of direction although I haven't quite finished with my favourite images from 2016, yet. |

Skilfully combining both the original thread title and the hijacked thread ... here we have a 'Well proportioned Classic from the 50s', which just happens to be a favourite image of mine from 2016 ...

Before we wander too far from the original intention, this is the car that as a lad I thought was the one I wanted 'when I grew up'. Sadly I never did so it remains a dream, but it still a great looking brute. Purposeful? In Spades!
Beautiful? Depends on the 'beholder'. Pug Ugly? Probably but who would care with a 5.0 litre Caddy under the hood. And yes it is a 2016 picture, Classic Media Day. |

One of the first race meetings I attended was a race at Boreham in 1952, and my first brush with death when a C. Le. S Metcalfe ran out of road in his Fiat Ballila.
