Challenge: Strahov, Prague, Czech Republic

I just came up with a very good idea for a challenge, one that may present many interesting proposals.

In the shadow of the Strahov monastery in the Czech capital of Prague, Strahov Stadium was originally constructed in 1926 as a wooden grandstand. The grandstand was rebuilt with concrete in the thirties, and was picked by the Communist regime after Soviet occupation following World War II to host a massive Socialist festival cum gymnastics exhibition called Spartakiade. Therefore, a massive expansion was commissioned, and in 1948, Strahov Stadium had a seating capacity of 220,000, making it by far the largest stadium in the world. Further renovations in 1975 increased the capacity to 250,000.

After the fall of Communism in Eastern Europe, the Spartakiade effectively died. With such a massive structure (the playing area is the size of nine soccer pitches), Strahov Stadium has found little use in the past decade. In an effort to attract international sporting events (such as the World Cup), the city of Prague wants to construct a new, 50,000 seat soccer stadium on part of the Strahov site. However, the new stadium would only use part of the site, so much of old Strahov would still be available for development. The fact that a massive roadway tunnel travels under the area hinders the extent of rebuilding that can be done.

This challenge is to plan a street circuit within the sporting district of Strahov for use during a racing weekend with a headlining card of DTM and the F3 Euroseries. The circuit should have a length of at least 2.5 kilometers (1.55 miles) but not more than 3.0 kilometers (1.86 miles). If you wish, you could also propose an extension measuring from 3.4 kilometers (2.11 miles) to 4.0 kilometers (2.50 miles) for use by Level 2 single-seaters (i.e. GP2, Formula Renault, Superfund World Series) and European GT series. Part of the circuit must make its way around the remaining west and south stands of Strahov Stadium (the new stadium would presumably mean the demolition of the north stand and at least part of the east stand), but does not necessarily have to be the paddock sections.

And...Upload!

Personally, I don't really like making street circuits on real streets unless I have an undertanding of how the streets look like (literally, the street, but also the elevational changes and other little things)...

Believe it or not, it's been done for real in the past!

Strahov Praag
1966 Czechoslvak F3 Champ Int Jankowski RAK-Ford
1966 Czechoslvak F3 Champ Int Melkus Melkus-Wartburg
1967 Czechoslvak F3 Champ Int Jankowski RAK-Ford

Don't know the circuit layout though... One of those circuits which is shrowded in mystery.

Why, yes, the very same!

(if you have Google Earth, you see that there's a lot of elevation at that site.)

I'd be interested in seeing that. The problem is that the Mac version of Google Earth doesn't run on my machine, yet.
