D L Wooding Escort 1300 /1840
Hi,
I am trying to find out any information on the Texaco Team Wooding, D L Wooding Escort Mk1 as driven by Paul Bergner, Christian Schmarje and Gerard Schuler. The shell was prepared from a new 1300GT by Mo Gomm in 1969. It was delivered to Broadspeed for them to fi a 1300cc engine. It was then converted to run an 1840 BDA for 1971 and Schmarje won the DARM under 2-litre class outright. Schuler drove the car in 1972 DRM and had good class results (usually 1st or 2nd) but some DNFs. There was a sister car driven by Jorg Obermoser and Peter Cramer. Thanks in anticipation, Martyn |

A quick Google for "D L Wooding Escort" turns up a number of results pages where D L Wooding can be found.
In '69 they mostly seem to list Minis but the driver names appear. I have seen one entry for a '71 event where there is a Wooding Escort listed as an RS 1600. http://www.norisringhistorie.de/1971...rterlisten.pdf see page 12. Also this for Schmarje http://www.racingsportscars.com/driv...chmarje-D.html From the last link in the latter .... http://www.racingsportscars.com/race...71-09-12a.html I would guess there is more out there just waiting to be found with the right search terms! ETA: There is a photo on this Hill Climb link for 1972. Jorg Obermoser driving apparently. http://www.racingsportscars.com/phot...972-08-06.html |

There's another Photo here.
http://www.racingsportscars.com/phot...972-08-27.html Won the Div II race. Obermoser again. A full season of 2 and sometimes 3 car entries listed in 1972 but the Wooding name then disappears. http://www.racingsportscars.com/suff...RS%201600.html There's a sort of interesting race report here. http://touringcarracing.net/Races/1971%20Fassberg.html See the box at the top of the listing. Another race report here. http://touringcarracing.net/Races/19...er%20Lowe.html The race reports for the 1971 year from the above site make interesting reading. Gosh, this is an old thread ..... but then I am pretty old as well! I worked at Wooding in Hamburg in the early 1970s. The first Wooding Escort, driven by Christian Schmarje, was already at Wooding when I arrived. It was a 1700cc BD engined car with a ZF gearbox. We built two more cars during the winter and the body shells were prepared by Morris Gomm (I know this because I collected them in the Wooding transporter). The engines were 1800cc BD series utilising Cosworth parts. The engines were built by us at Wooding and run-in and tested by me on our dyno. The rear axles were prepared by Ford Cologne and were very light as they utilised a lot of aluminium. The brackets for the four link rear suspension were clamped on (like SU throttle arms) not welded as the welds (aluminium) used to break. There were Teflon leaf springs which did nothing but complied with the regs. The actual working rear springs were torsion bars which were modified Morris Marina front torsion bars. There was also a Watt's linkage to locate the rear axle left to right. One of the cars was for Jorg Obermoser. Obermoser owned a factory which made electric motors with attached gearboxes. We stayed at Obermoser's place for a few nights whilst we completed his car in his workshops. He had a house in the factory grounds complete with two lanes of ABC bowling alley!

Welcome back, gungebucket! Not mentioned on this thread, but one of the Wooding Escorts was beautifully restored a couple of years ago and has been raced again. Just wondering if you had any input during the restoration?
