New speeding fine rules

Pardon me, as a newbie, but I though you all ought to know the following. Yesterday the government had a meeting following a substantial increase in road deaths this year. The result, from today, is the following:-

1. Any excess speed more than 30mph over the prevailing limit will incur a fine of 3,750 euros and the car/bike impounded. see 3.

2. The offence has now been uprated to a serious crime, and punishable with up to five years in prison

3. The vehicle will be confiscated and sold for state funds

4. Any use of a mobile phone will incur a fine of 135 euros on the spot

5. Motorcyclists must from hereon wear a high viz jacket at all times

6. The alcohol limit has remained at 0.5 grammes, not reduced to 0.2 as thought

7.The request to reduce the maximum speed limit in town to 20mph has not been applied

I am sure that there will be numerous cases of people who, after Le Mans, will cry wolf, but I can't give you a more grave warning than this. I spoke to a gendarme today and they are under orders to implement the letter of the law.

That still allows 110mph on the autoroute and 98 on Routes Nationale which is more than enough to enjoy the journey. And probably still more lenient then being caught in this country doing those speeds.

Well it doesn't state that you won't get a fine for speeding at below that limit, just that if it's 30mph (I presume thats 50kph btw) over the limit it's the big fine and you get your vehicle impounded. I guess at 150kph on the peage you are still gonna get a fine...

TBH I travel at 140kph on the peage and for the last couple of years that is pretty much common from my experience, very few have come past us at warp factor 2. The big cash fine seems to have more of an impact than the threat of three points on your license it seems.

sarthe72, thanks for the heads up. Although I wasn't planning at driving that much over the limit. What is the situation below that at the moment in France.

Dad got done a few mph over the speed limit on the Autoroute a few years ago. I can't remember the fine, but it was circa 100Euros. We had to go to a cash machine.
