Another potential hillclimb newb

Afternoon all, be gentle, it's my first post.

I'm contemplating getting into Hillclimb with my MX5 in the stock/roadgoing class.

I've raced motorcycles offroad/rallying but an old wrist injury is making riding less and less comfortable and I've actually ended up attending no events this year due to that, and other factors (anyone want to buy a 600cc Husky rally bike? ).

It doesn't affect my driving, however, so I'm thinking hillclimb might be a fun way to keep my competitive petrolheadery going, and a step up from trackdays.

Hillclimb and/or Sprint appeals as it's an 'individual' event against the clock... I find that suits me more than that red-mist-jostling-for-the-corner style competition of track racing.

My MX5 is supercharged and is in regular use on the road (I can't take my son pillion, but I can take him in an open-top roadster). Am I right in understanding the following with regards to it's eligibility and requirements?
  • Supercharged means a 1.4 engine capacity factor (so my 1.8 would be counted as a 2.5?)
  • A timing strut needs to be attached to the front of the car
  • The car can be completely stock in terms of seats, seatbelts and whatnot
  • In terms of PPE, I need a suitable helmet and FIA approved overalls
  • TOW and "ignition off" stickers need to be applied to the car, along with a suitable number board.
  • Tyres need to be as listed in the MSA blue book list 1A

In terms of joining clubs, I was considering HSA.

Other than that, is there anything else I need to know, or do to get started that I may have overlooked?

I'm pretty sure that you have it mostly right, but always triple check the following link and speak to the series organiser before entering (they will be happy to help):

Other things:

Tyres. Depending on the series, you may be allowed 1B tyres.

You need gloves in addition to helmet and overalls (check ebay for overalls!).

I would not compete in an MX5 without adequate rollover protection.

Supercharged MX5 should be excellent fun! Which locations are you thinking of?

Hi, I'm also starting out next year in an MX5 although mine is a stock 1.8SV-T
I've just joined the Midland Automobile Club at Shelsley as they run a ten round series which will be ideal for me.

At present, I've only had the roll cage fitted (GCF Fabrications fitted at Suffolk Mazda) but have purchased new brakes and an intake kit and I'm off to Autosport to look at seats and harnesses next week.
Tyres I think I'm limited to 1A for the roadgoing series I'll be competing in.

Good luck and hopefully we may bump into each other
Dave
