Flooding the market

Read an article in an old magazine which said there were 25 different makes of Formula Ford car on the market in 1970. Not quite sure how any of them managed to make a living, and it set me wondering just which cars these were. Off the top of my head, I can think of Lotus, Merlyn, Alexis, Titan, Palliser, Hawke, Royale, Dulon and Elden. What were the others?

Blimy, how could I forget Crosle and Lola. I thought Huron didn't arrive on the scene until 1971. And add March.

Surely Pringett and Mistral were the same thing? One of the few racing cars to receive a model name rather than a number. I ain't counting Brabham! And add the obscure Vista.

Of course you must mention that Roger. And was a Lenham the same thing as a Hamlen, or was that just an anagram that I imagined?

Didn't Gabriel Konig make some in that notorious series of lock up garages somewhere in Clapham ? Not sure if they were called Nomads like their sports cars...

Now there's a thought for another thread - "what happened in 65 North Street", or something like that. Tenants I can recall off the top of my head were Mark Konig and his Nomad enterprise, Palliser, Gerry Birrell (who also had something to do with supplying Dunlop racing tyres).....who else?

Davemorganfan.
The story of the Hamlen-Lenham Formula Ford cars verges on incestuous. The first car built, the Hamlen, was you say an anagram of Lenham. It was built in the back workshop of Lenham Hurst Racing by David Martin who latter produced the Martlet F Ford cars at Goodwood. When David Martin left the design evolved into the Lenham Formula Ford by virtue of sharing the same chassis designer, namely Peter Coleman. And a good time was had by all!!!

Davrian Developments, multi modsports champions, were based at 65 North Street, and did glassfibre work for some of the other motor racing incumbents, including Bert Ray, I think.

I think all of Ray, Javelin, Image are too modern. In later times, anyone remember the Agent, and Alta, and the amazing Prowess ??

Tecno FF cars? That's a new one on me. Converted F3 cars, perhaps, or a model in its own right?

Skip Barber won the 1969 & 1970 FF SCCA championship in a Caldwell.

My brother-in-law ran cars against the Caldwell team in both years. In 1969, he started with Bill Scott, of FV fame, in an Alexis MK15, until Bill was injured in Germany. In 1970, he ran a Titan Mk6 and Caldwell D9B with Bill Baldwin driving, even entered in the Canadian GP support event.

Ferret's were a Canadian built and run FF in the seventies. Very quick car too, as it won the CDN championship a number of years running.
