Gearbox and Propshaft...
The Saga of the Granada Drivetrain:-
A wee while ago, a nasty vibration alertad me to a propshaft problem. On inspection, the prop was found to have a seized joint at the front end. I had a new one made up and had it fitted by someone I trust with our cars. Not long after, the gearbox became noisy and then self destructed- I assumed our man had forgotten to put oil in it, but he assured me he remembered doing it. At this point a month passed whilke I tried and failed to get a 'box from the car club shop, but thats another story... I took the car to a gearbox specialist yesterday, and they told me the prop was too short and thus had let the oil out (not good) The prop builder says they built what I asked for (they didn't have the old one to work with) Does anyone out there know how many different sizes or lengths of prop there are for mk2 Granada's (ours is a 1983 2.3 Lx 5-speed man. saloon) |

I took the brop back to the prop-man today, and he said it was a good 3" short- thats more than the difference between the longest and shortest Granada props (according to the Granada Enthusiasts Club...) so he's going to build a new one pronto!
Now I need to have words with the chap who installed it! |

Granada's back home now and running well- it felt good to be back in the old thing after driving a Corsa for the last month and a half! All we need to do now is sort out who's going to pay for the mistake.....

murphy's law says it's the one person who's least likely to be able to afford it...
surely you'd notice if a something was 3 inches too short? |

I'm not even going to thing about the slightest hint of the possibility of going down the road of innuendo- suffice to say things like
"I've not had any complaints before" and "It seemed to fit ok" Bella- re your current sig, a friend of mine recomends Dutton sportscars..... Last edited by Bluebottle; 10 Jun 2002 at 23:24. |

We're in Linlithgow for the weekend- drove from Pinner with a trailer full of furniture for my wifes cousin- pulled into the last service station on the M6, heard an odd noise, opened the bonnet to reveal a bad case of broken water pump- water everywhere! (but it wasn't running hot at all!)
Got a go in the big lorry with the flashing lights.... |

We've had it fixed now by a nice garage in Linlithgow who had it done by lunchtime today - no world cup problems 'cause we're in Scotland!!

Im glad Im not the only one . . . .Ive changed everything on my car (MK1 Cortina) and stil have bad vibes (must be an out of balance prop) Ive experienced the too short causing vibration too, another thing was no bearing in the flywheel . . . .the only mechanical component from when I bought the car in January is the radiator. If the propshaft balance doesnt cure it I may be forced to set the bloody thing on fire!
