The Deer in the Headlights Look
Was it just me, or did Alonso look rather stunned on the podium and also in the post-race interviews? He had the look of a man who can't quite believe that he had (most likely) the best car, drove it well and still lost. He truly looked like he could not believe Michael had won it.

he certainly looked a bit downbeat and morose... maybe not stunned but i guess he's been used to doing the job, driving without mistakes and getting over the finish line before anyone else. Today he drove as he usually did, maybe even better than he has done for a while because he was challenged, but he was outpaced and outraced...
i think he realises that there is now a real fight, and TGF looks dangerous now that his hunger is up again, and also that massa has shown he's a very credible and helpful no.2... |

I think he was just a bit gutted that Michael took the win, a bit like me as it happens. Nothing worse than a Schumacher win...
I wouldn't read too much into it, other than perhaps, a stark realisation for Fernando that both Ferrari and Michael are re-juvinated, and he'll be a bit embarrased that he came P2 after starting on Pole. |

He's a man who clearly likes to win! But yes, I also noticed he did not look his usual cheerful self. Is it just me, or have his eyebrows been sheared off a bit more than usual?

Well. yeah, it really was embarassing when the camera focused him in the podium, but I thought he was tired or worried about something with the car. |

Nothing to worry about I suppose except that Michael has done very well at Barcelona.
To me at least he seemed quite uncomfortable with just how jazzed Michael was about winning. He knows Fisi won't be much help in gaining the WCC as well as the WDC. With his plans to go to McLaren it would seem that Renault may not be helping him much late in the season with cutting edge updates as they won't want them going to Mc with him. |

I think Fernando was beginning to believe that he has become a better driver than Michael. Today he was shown that in an equally paced car he is still no match for the Master.

He did look rather stunned on the podium. His awkward attempts at cracking a smile were terrible really.
But then, I'd be pretty upset in his situation. Ferrari have a car advantage at present, Michael is rejuvenated and the lead Alonso holds is nothing like it was last season. He has a fight on his hands. |

Alonso must surely be thinking about how serious a threat Michael and Ferrari would be.
Renault tried to make him believe that Imola is just a Ferrari one-off, and to be fairly beaten by quite a margin in every sense yesterday must have been a shock. Since winning the WDC and so far this season, he must be led into believing the F1 scene is now his to take with a great car. But Michael just show that with a car that matches the Renault, MS is still the master. And it isn't easy for Alonso. He tried for 30 over laps to shake Michael off, but Michael still controlled the gap and hang on. Then, within 4 laps, Michael converts a 1 second deficit to an almost 6 second lead...must have rattled him somewhat. |

GT_R, excellent point. Michael is truly the Master and filling Alonso's mirrors for so many laps and then turning a deficit into a lead lets him know that his (Michael's) intention is to do exactly that race-in and race-out. All of a sudden that points lead does not look so big and comfortable anymore. |

Bridgestones were the tyres to have at the Nurburgring without doubt, I think Michelin also have a big fight on their hands too this year. I would put down a lot of the pace of the Ferrari's and the Williams' too on the superb Bridgestone tyres they ran.
If Michelin can pull something out of the bag for Catalunya, then it could be a different story this weekend. Ferrari have always been quick at Barcelona too, so I guess it could well be another 2nd place for Alonso this weekend. |

Yeah, he looked a bit off both on the podium and in the interview. First time I think I've seen TGF actually get under his skin.
Someone needs to remind him it was his 11th STRAIGHT podium. The second most ever to Michael's 19. If he just keeps doing what he's doing, finishing on the podium, he'll still be tough to catch as long as he gets in a few scattered wins. But one mistake, a DNF with a Schumi win, and he's in real trouble. Imagine the look on Alonso's face if the same thing happens next week at his home GP! |

Which, i'm sure he's more than capable of doing. Of course Fernando was going to be a bit miffed, it's the first time he's been 'beaten' to a win whilst really going for it for quite a while! Sure he 'lost' a couple of races last year when he had inferior car on the day, or he wasn't pushing as hard. Sure Montoya guzumped him a couple of times, but he knew too well not to mix it with him and risk vital points. But I reckon he'll be up for it, he hasn't got such a margin as he had over Kimi at this stage last year so I suspect he will have to push pretty hard to battle the Ferrari! What about ego's? Fernando still remembers MS' move on him on the Hangar straight in '03 and MS remembers those 2 mighty passes Fernando made on him at Suzuka last year. I'd like to see what happens if one ot other of them makes a move on the orther now there's more at stake!! |

correct me if im wrong, but even if alonso came 2nd for the rest of the season theres a fairly good chance he would still win the chamiponship
