2017 Pirelli World Challenge Rounds 4 & 5: VIR

The teams of Pirelli World Challenge head to VIR next week for the next round in the overall GT championship and the first round of Sprint-X competition.

34 cars are on the initial entry list for Sprint-X, 17 for GTS and 54 for the TC classes.

GT regulars are joined by plenty of notable co-drivers like Jorg Bergmeister, Michael Lewis, Kyle Marcelli, Johnny Kane, Ben Barnicoat, Vincent Abril, Laurens Vanthoor, Jeroen Bleekemolen, Jan Heylen, Marco Seefried, Spencer Pumpelly, Andrea Montermini, Alexandre Imperatori, Mark Wilkins, Jordan and Ricky Taylor, Tom Dyer and many others.

No co-driver yet announced for Ryan Dalziel's #2 CRP Racing Mercedes, or Martin Fuentes' #7 Scuderia Corsa Ferrari. (Good to see Fuentes back in the series)

Always Evolving/AIM Autosport are back with a single Nissan GT-R entry for Ricardo Sanchez and Frank Montecalvo.
McCann Racing switches to Audi with a car for Mike Skeen and Michael McCann.

Several other new and returning teams with GT3 entries are on the list.

Still not a fan of the Sprint-X concept, but some of these lineups are pretty awesome. Especially can't wait to see Patrick Long and Jorg Bergmeister driving the same car again!

7 classes for a 35 car field seems...excessive.

It gives an old ALMS fan such as myself a sweet, sentimental feeling deep down inside.

Don't worry. 3 classes have already been decided. 1 class already has the podium wrapped up. 1 class is just a game of rock paper scissors to determine who wins and who doesn't. In the end, a 2 class race.

52 cars for the TC race. Can't imagine any cautions during that race, especially when the TCB cars are probably 25 seconds/lap slower than a TC car.

Seems pretty lame that they have to split GTS into two classes.

By Sunday afternoon, there will be 24 PWC winners and 6 of those winners have already been decided. Technically where would be 72 trophies given out during the weekend but since 3 classes have one car each and 1 class has 2, that means only 66 trophies will be awarded. Hopefully some more enter those classes because PWC probably ordered those 72 trophies.

I refuse to watch TC until they split those into Pro-Am and Am-Am as well.

Was wondering who the 35th Sprint-X entry would be. Good to see Cisneros back. The Momo Ferrari was one of the best looking GTA cars in '15.

Don't worry, TC in 2018 will be like GTS is now. Took a great class and ruined it by splitting it up into two classes. Now they will hand out 12 trophies for a total of 34 finishers over two days. That's just over 35% which will get a trophy. For GTS Sprint X and GTCup SprintX, 100% get trophies. Get ready for lots of social media pics of winners and podium finishers.

Also, where are the new GT4 Mustangs? They are already running in Conti and have proven to be winners. Where are the Ginetta's? Wasn't Turner to enter three cars in TC and one in GTA?

I feel bad for GT Pro/Pro, GT Pro/Am, TC, and TCA because those guys will actually have to bust their hump just for mid pack. I still feel bad for TCB because when that train of TC cars come barreling down on them on the back straight clearing them by 70 mph while TCB is trying to maintain momentum by being 1/4" off of the guy in front of you as it takes lots of being aware of your surroundings.

Interesting that the latest entry list (the one w/ DIME added) removed the Taylors from the Cadillacs.

I'd missed that Dream Racing was entered. VIR has lots of spots for Larry DeGeorge to crash in spectacular fashion.

Because of the size of the pits layout at VIR, as well as at CTMP and LRP (the next two races), there is a 35 car limit for SprintX, and thus DIME is listed as the first alternative.

SprintX GT: 28
GTS: 19
TC: 32
TCA: 15
TCB: 8

Sounds great to me. With so many entries, it's time to have separate TC and TCA / TCB races.

Latest update to the entry has two ANSA XBows added, one of them listed to be driven by MRTI standout Nico Jamin.

That makes no sense. Sprint X pit stops are ridiculously simple and there's no reason why you can't stack them in the pits. We did it for years in IMSA and the first few years in Grans-Am with no times pit stops for anyone. Grand-Am pretty much got it right when they just split the pit stops for classes when we started getting around 100 cars at VIR. As we all know, the pits pretty much have actually got better since then.

I don't think PWC has any sort of radio broadcast or scanner frequency. As far as I know, there's just the commentary on the PA system.

A TCB car sounds like its more harder to drive then in some of the faster classes.
