From a driver's point of view - I can say that after an accident, no matter how big or small, it's immensely reassuring to have orange-clad heroes (or heroines)scrambling to the scene within seconds, to help you out, check you're okay, and generally deal with the situation, leaving the driver to recover/think of an excuse (depending on the severity)
Fast-response vehicles? They just wouldn't be fast enough! |

Was watching a proggy that i taped months ago from the Discovery chanel. It was to do with safety in motorsport. They basically were using Indy cars on the oval circuits, and were talking about ways of overcoming accidents to the rear of the cars due to impact with the wall, that aside, the fast response pickups they were using carried all that was needed, all crews carried individual radioes etc. They had the job down to a fine art, the driver got rolling before an incident had actually taken place, either watching for oil smoke or cars to approach spilt oil etc...All very good i thought, can you imagine a Fr pickup at Brands coming out from the pit lane after watching a Tuscan with smoke coming out the back, chasing it down paddock hill and around druids, then following it back to the pits...It would be like watching something from a carry on film...
It can only happen on the ovals, simply because there is the vision require to do so... |

And don't forget they have the lower half of the track to use as well. On normal circuit racing where would the safety car team be driving? Why on the same track as the race drivers silly

OK, ovals - maybe; real circuits (oops!)- no; drivers (well 100% 0f those who have joined the debate want 'orangie/blackie peoples'.
So where does that leave us? Well, certainly in 2002 with posts under-peopled. For 2003? Hopefully more marshals if we all try to recruit. For 2004? Well unless the MSA el al address the issues raised here and in other 'authoritative journals' those who joined us the previous year will have moved on and we shall be back where we are now. So there we go - insufficient marshals - how is safety to be ensured - 'alterative arrangements' - fast intervention cars??? Back where we started folks!! The MSA has a dilemma and hopefully soon the deliberations that must be being held in committee will be made known to us... ... in the words of the oracle: watch this space - but don't hold your breath... |

Thanks Stephen - just think how dangerous we would be if we had brains (but then I guess we wouldn't be Observers...).
Have a great weekend - I'll be at Castle Combe... |

Silverstone for me, responding to screams for help
Then I found out that there are 28+ cars for most of the races and only three startline marshals..... Last edited by neilwaynesmith; 13 Sep 2002 at 15:28. |

I've been asleep for the last 3 months [hospitalsed an recuperating to be exact] but I dont recall a further response from Sir Jackie. Was the matter pursued, or was the matter left with the BMMC etc executives to resolve at their level?

Hi Tony,
There had been some discussion with the BMMC and their working party going on and so I felt it wise to play the 'wait and see' game for a while. Also, given the uncertainty over Octagon's future in British Motor Sport it make sence to wait a while longer before writing to Sir Jackie again. I hope that helps a little and welcome back to the forum, hopefully you are now fully recovered? |

Stephen
Thank you for your update. Its interesting to note that Sir Jackie gave an interim response to your August letter within a week. Since then not a peep from him. Am I being cynical [once again] or is ever to be the marshals lot to be ignored by those in high places? Tony |

Possibly. Nor did I ever get any response from the people he copied my letter to!
